Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

After twenty years working in Paris, I decided I wanted to create a guest house in a small historic town. This project could have been done anywhere in France. It was by chance on a weekend in Dinan that I was enchanted by the region, the city and this house. Typical of 15th-16th century houses, it was clearly the setting I needed for my project. The icing on the cake: a plaque on the facade indicated that August Pavia, explorer and diplomat in Indochina during the 19th century, was born in this house. Having lived in Vietnam for a while, I didn't even think twice: my project would come to life here. So we bought the house in 2010 and opened in January 2011 after a year of intensive work because the last development took place forty years ago.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer comfort, elegance, modernity and refinement in a listed 15th century house fully furnished by a renowned architect, Christophe Bachmann. It is in the heart of a medieval city, the City of Art and History. A large dining room overlooks the garden where hearty breakfasts can be enjoyed. During sunny days, the quiet and shaded garden allows our guests to relax after a day of excursions. The table d'hôtes is also available by reservation and changes depending on the market produce and inspiration of the day.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house dates back to the 15th century and is located on Saint-Sauveur Square, near the basilica. The wood-panelled facade was added to the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1961. It consists of an original, projecting square porch set on a wooden structure supported by three pillars. The central pillar is made of wood and the two on either side are in stone. The steep sloped pavilion roof is covered with slate and pierced by a skylight. The roof and skylight are topped with a finial.

Places you would personally recommend

Our favourite restaurants in Dinan are the "Cantorbéry" and "Les 3 Lunes". A little further, in Cancale is the unmissable "Coquillage" at Château Richeux which was opened by chef Olivier Roellinger, and also the "Breizh Café".

What is its history ?

Since the beginning, this house has always been inhabited by notables of the city. Auguste Pavie was born in this house in 1847; this is why we named it the "maison Pavie". August Pavie ended his career as Ambassador Plenipotentiary in Laos. He was a humanist nicknamed "the barefoot explorer". His story inspired the decor of the house.

Our opinion

Though smaller than its neighbours, the maison pavie proudly meets the Basilica of Saint-Sauveur in the eye as it watches over. The house is one of Dinan's many small treasures. Middle-aged in its foundations, it hides nothing of its long history. On the contrary, large granite slabs support the base, thick slats of solid oak support the floors and through the mud walls it has retained what makes the strength and calm of the place. There is also something of an adventurous spirit here, like the explorer whose name the property bears. The 21st century was embraced with an open mind to new materials, colours and comfort that has not always been known here. Having been given a new lease of life, the maison pavie is ready to listen to the stories of its guests, be they lovers of medieval history or sea-side enthusiasts (the Pink Granite Coast is nearby), who will come here for a much needed break.
