Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

I am a landscape architect and I promote artists because I am passionate about art. A few years ago, I was looking for a place with a garden where I could showcase my work, the French expertise, the world of art, gardens and nature and the work of other artists. I also wanted a reception area where I could host my clients. When this historic house and garden (overlooking looking the Eiffel Tower near to Trocadero) with a countryside spirit came to me, I immediately bought it!

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We welcome guests into our home with discretion and elegance. A fruit basket and refreshments can be enjoyed upon arrival along with macarons from Carette served in white porcelain from Limoges. A range of Bulgari products worthy of a large hotel are provided in the bathroom. We are present when needed and give our guests privacy. Our large table d'hôtes is always open for sharing a coffee. The house opens onto a 130 m2 garden. Intimate and cosy, it houses an art gallery and gives guests the chance to relax and enjoy a coffee or aperitif.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

It is a Neo-Gothic building built in 1883. The triangular form of the property comes from the project manager's desire to express his attachment to Masonic symbolism. The facade is composed of a double layer of stone and brick and is listed because it features many animal sculptures. The work I did on the garden was inspired the great botanists of the l'école de Nancy (my home town) who sought to enhance the value nature.

Places you would personally recommend

We give our guests plenty of tips when they arrive. Amongst our recommendations is "l'Étude", a restaurant run by a brilliant Japanese chef. Located five minutes away, it serves delicious food in remarkable crockery. The "Pâtisserie des Rêves", just a stone's throw away, is an excellent example of French artisanal expertise. Patrick Roger, a great chocolatier, is also nearby. For culture lovers, the area is full of museums: palais de Tokyo, musée Guimet, musée de l'Homme, Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, musée du Quai Branly.

What is its history ?

As the district was developing at the end of the 19th century, the Fournier family built their house on the old quarries. In 1910, the house was donated to Pearl Watt (a well-known silent film actress from America) by one of her Egyptian admirers. She was the best-paid woman of her time and hosted everybody who was anybody after moving to the French capital. The Belgian princess of Caraman-Chimay then settled here for a few years. In 1956, she sold the house to Jacques Homberg, a collector of art and close friend of Christian Dior. He died in 1957 after living here for just one year. Jacques Hombert, who died in 200, left his fortune to his valet who sold the property to a merchant. We bought it from him in 2006.

Our opinion

Just behind the foliage along the avenue that leads to Trocadero, and under the benevolent gaze of the Eiffel Tower is "6 Mandel" - one of Paris' best kept secrets. Sheltered by a tastefully exuberant garden, this neo-Gothic-style mansion keeps the memory of a brilliant, art-loving society that met here for over a century alive. With the extension of a large skylight, it is now the perfect setting for receptions, exhibitions and sophisticated overnight stays in a unique room where many details celebrate the memory of former guest, Mr. Dior.
