At the edge of a hilltop overlooking the valley and village below, the former cemetery and fortress of Pierreclos perches proudly above its terrace. Magnificent views of the vineyards, however, are just the beginning of what this Historic Monument has to offer. The owners-come-winemakers produce Macon, Pouilly, Saint Véran and Bourgogne, whilst also opening their doors to tours, organic wine tastings and so much more. Five of the rooms in this impressively large mansion have been reserved for guests, including a spectacular suite in the donjon. With a harmony of beige and white that echoes the local stones and contrasts beautifully with the rich colours of the glazed roof tiles, Pierreclos remains a formidable homage to the Burgundy region that was often celebrated by Lamartine. Milly-Lamartine, the poet’s vineyard which neighboured those belonging to former lords of the castle, is now part of the estate. Staying at Pierreclos, even if just for a night, promises a glimpse of the little valley that lay beneath the morning frost or the distant towers that were gilded by the evening sun in Larmatine’s famous poem, “Milly ou la terre natale”.
Not only was the climate of the region very appealing to us, but we also felt that the chateau had a lot of potential.
Pierreclos is a lively chateau with a complex architecture. At the end of the paved driveway, a gate between two pavilions opens onto the forecourt with a vaulted passage separating it from the courtyard of the chateau. Square buildings surround it on both sides. To the south-east stands a tall square tower, above it are the consoles of the parapet. Against it stands a rectangular building featuring a square tower and watch towers on 19th century bases. This second square tower is topped with a pavilion roof. The main body of the chateau is at a right angle to these buildings and consists of two floors. An unfinished building leans against it. These buildings are served by a suspended spiral staircase, the landings of which are covered with ribbed vaults and supported by Tuscan-style pillars. The remains of an old church from the second half of the 12th century complete the ensemble, only the steeple and the choir are still standing.
The name ‘Pierreclos’ comes from ‘petra clausa’ meaning closed stone, or in other words, tomb. Indeed, throughout the 12th century, Pierreclos was a cemetery dedicated to illustrious men of the surrounding Roman province. The chateau first appears in archives in 1282, when the lord of Berze appoints his chateau to the Duke of Burgundy. The fortress then lived through several important periods of French history: the hundred years war, the wars of religion, the French revolution. Since the 18th century it has served as a leisure chateau surrounded by gardens.
A beautiful place where moments of calm can be livened up with a tour and wine-tasting.
It can be so tempting to spend all day on the terrace, enjoying a wine from the estate with some goat’s cheese or a Mâconnais (depending on the time of day). But it would be a pity not to see the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, a must-see just a few minutes away. It would also be a shame not to try the ‘pôchouse’ served at the Restaurant du Pont in Saint Didier sur Chalaronne.

Pierreclos has five guest rooms including two family suites, one for up to four people and the other for up to five. The ‘Suite des Comtes’, the largest of the rooms, occupies the first floor of the six-five square metre donjon. It has an independent entrance, a Versailles parquet floor, a French-style ceiling, 17th century wall panelling and a stunning view of the vineyards and surrounding countryside. Aside from this suite having a king-size bed, all of the rooms have queen-size beds.
We offer a tasting of wines from the estate in the spectacular vaulted cellars of the chateau.

Easter at the chateau. First spring rendezvous for all ages. Even in the Middle Ages, eggs were carefully decorated to celebrate the end of Lent. The chateau team invites you to paint and decorate your eggs as they did back then, and to take part in the fantastic egg hunt on site.
