Location

Where the borders of the French departments of Indre-et-Loire, Sarthe and Maine-et-Loire meet, in a land of small irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches, with hills as well as forests and dotted with twisted church spires and superb residences. In the heart of a historic town, proud of its 15th century castle, near to vast forests where “Good King René” came to hunt. Near to the A11 (280 km from Paris) and A85 motorways.
40 km from Angers, 35 km from Saumur and 17 km from La-Flèche.
In a small lively town with more than 10,000 inhabitants as well as all shops and amenities: schools, doctors, a golf course, sporting facilities, etc.

Description

This mansion house is part of a block of old houses in the town centre. It comprises a main house and two outbuildings also used for accommodation purposes. This property is built on a plot set between two quiet streets, near to the castle. It is reached, off one of these streets, via a barrel-vault passageway which opens into a courtyard or, off the other street, via a door that opens directly into a lounge. The building straddles a narrow river which, in the courtyard, takes the form of a water garden.

The main house

The main house comprises five buildings set out all in a row, one of them housing an Italian loggia-style stairway-gallery. Another adjoins a half-tower, once used as latrines. The stairway and the half-tower are constructed above a narrow stream. The dwelling is built of stone and limestone quarry blocks. The framing around the openings, the quoins, the cornices, the roof formers and the half-tower are built of freestone. Each building is topped with its own individual slate roof. One of the four buildings has mullioned windows.


Ground floor
This dwelling is entered via the building housing the stairway. On one side is a small bathroom with a jack arched ceiling and two arched windows leading to a toilet and, on the other, a lounge with a stone floor and fireplace with curved jambs and a French ceiling. Following on from the lounge, the dining room with its stone floor is enhanced with three semi-circular arches, one of which opens into the kitchen with its French ceiling. The kitchen still has its terracotta tile floor and its stone sink. It is illuminated by two large, raised picture windows, separated by a marble pillar.
The half-pace, stone stairway features two quarter turns and a loggia-style landing.

First floor
The loggia-style landing, illuminated via three asymmetrical arched windows, has a terracotta tile floor and a French ceiling, just like all the rooms on this floor. It leads to a lounge with a freestone fireplace, two windows and a door opening on to the street. The joists are supported by stone corbels. This lounge provides access to a small bathroom, with a cross-rib ceiling vault, which comprises a toilet and a wash-hand basin. On the other side of the landing are two adjoining rooms; one is currently used as a study whilst the other is a lounge. The latter has a freestone fireplace.
Second floor
The loggia-style landing, illuminated like the one below via three asymmetrical arched windows, also has a terracotta tile floor, just like all the rooms on this floor. It leads to a bedroom with a French ceiling and a freestone fireplace. The room is illuminated via three windows and provides access to a small bathroom, with a semi-circular arched ceiling, fitted with a wash-hand basin, a bath tub and a toilet. On the other side, the landing provides access to another bedroom featuring an exposed roofing framework as well as to a dressing room and a shower room with a shower, a wash-hand basin and a toilet.
Third floor
The loggia, also illuminated by three arched windows, leads on one side, to a bedroom, with terracotta floor tiles and an exposed roofing framework, adjoining a shower room with a shower and a separate toilet. There is an attic on the other side.

The outbuildings

The outbuildings comprise two houses which can be reached from the street as well as from the courtyard.
The first comprises an entrance hall with a single wooden flight, quarter-turning stairway and a terracotta tile floor as well as a kitchen with a fireplace and stone floor on the ground floor. On the first floor are a bedroom, with exposed ceiling beams, terracotta floor tiles as well as a freestone fireplace, and a shower room with a shower and a toilet. The second floor comprises a bedroom with terracotta floor tiles and exposed ceiling beams.
The second house comprises a garage, on the road side, which communicates with a library opening on to the courtyard. The library is set out with a mezzanine floor over the two upper levels reached via a winding stairway composed of two flights, one of stone and the other wood. On the first floor, a large study has a freestone fireplace and exposed ceiling beams. The second floor is an attic.

The garden courtyard

The front section of the garden courtyard, covered with old paving stones, is planted with a large rectangular plot of lavender bushes. Wisteria covers one of the walls. The other section, where two ornamental pools and a terrace have been installed, is taken up by an old canopy. It is supported on stone walls, the gables of which are half-timbered and the roofing framework covered with slate. At the end, a passageway with two stone steps leads to the banks of the river Altrée. Near to the canopy is a third ornamental pool, in which the facade of the dwelling is reflected. This is followed by a door opening into the ground floor of the half-tower which houses the old latrines with their vaulted ceiling. A door, finally, opens into a large vaulted cellar.

Our opinion

This outstanding mansion house, with its air of an Italian Renaissance palace, is a world all of its own, soothed by the gentle babbling of the river Altrée going through it. Completely neglected for more than a century, its exemplary and extremely sober restoration works have breathed new life into its splendid ivory walls and enhanced its unusual architecture. Although it is in the centre of town, this property exudes a peace and quiet that can but encourage creative reflection. It would, therefore, ideally suit an artist, a writer or even a musician.
