A house in an authentic, 13th century,
listed chapel in the centre of a Medieval town

Location

In the heart of a fortified town, classified as a Town of Art and History, built on a hill dominating the Picardy plains. In addition to the various buildings and outstanding sites, numerous mansion houses as well as 16th, 17th and 18th century houses form a real life urban museum. This unusual place is well known to tourist guides. The chapel is situated just a stone’s throw from the cathedral, in the centre of the Medieval district with a wealth of underground passageways, quarries and wells. The town, easily accessed via the N2 or the A26, is approx. 90 minutes from the capital, less than two hours from Brussels and has train links to Paris’ Gare-du-Nord.

Description

This chapel built in the 12th century was originally that of the “Châtelain Royal”, who answered directly to the Crown and locally exercised high justice. It remained until the very beginning of the 16th century, the time when it was transformed into a middle-class house.
Occupied then by a “Sergent Royal” (tasked with prosecutions and confiscations), it belonged to various members of the town’s leading citizens over the centuries.
In 1981, a local family bought the run-down house which had not been lived in for several years, and undertook restoration works. Said works revealed two ogive arcades, one of which, walled up from the beginning, is still adorned with a mural painting representing the Annunciation. The work is remarkably preserved.

Analysis of the characters and the design of the clothes enabled a regional painter and illuminator to be named. This treasure was found covered up following a strong earthquake that shook the town at the beginning of the 16th century. The west wall, threatening to collapse, was then roughly consolidated, together with the right-hand arcade. Once the painting had been protected with parchment, both arcades were walled up with stones and mortar.
In addition, still in the 16th century, the ground floor was raised by five metres and the current floor placed on a brick vaulted support with a stone keystone.
This explains the apparent disproportions of the drawing as it is today, with a kneeling virgin who appears to be standing, an angel with very short arms and a vertically stretched cushion. This is actually an anamorphosis, a voluntary distortion intended at the time to correct the perspective as the painting was admired from five metres lower down, with very little room to move backwards.
The mural painting is a simple application of pigments on a limestone slurry covering an older decoration. Various interventions have enabled the work to be saved and restored since its discovery.
The entire building has been completely restored and secured on three floors of living space, as have the four levels of vast basements, 100 m² (1,076 sq ft) of which have been converted.

Our opinion

The privileged choice of a residence in the heart of a historic town, in an old house resulting from the transformation of an authentic Medieval chapel, is not to be ignored.
Especially as this building with a long line of descendants is situated just a short distance from Paris, in a region with a strong tourist trade, in the middle of exquisite countryside. And the building possibly abounds with hidden treasures.
