This former Provost’s house, opposite a church, testament to a bygone era still stands proudly in the village. A village that stretches over a plateau overlooking an old Royal Road from Paris to Lyon. This region fascinates with its lush green plains crossed by the mysterious and enchanting Loire River, rolling hills and picturesque villages.
Just ten minutes from the centre of Roanne, that has preserved its old historic town centre, 12th century castle, market place and Italian-style theatre.
The towns of Saint-Etienne, Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand are approx. an hour’s drive away, where there are TGV stations and airports, one of which is Lyon-Saint-Exupéry international airport.
The Provost’s house
It spans three floors and 300 m2 of living space, is flanked by a round tower and is topped by a steep-slope roof housing the attic area. The facades are built of local stone and contain mullioned windows and loopholes bearing witness to its defensive past. The garden does not surround the house completely but it is entirely walled thus providing discretion and privacy.
Access to the building is via an oak wood door directly from a little street. This panelled door is topped by a basket-handle arch with extrados a piece of art in itself. It is flanked on either side by imitation pilasters creating a beautiful stone architectural feature. Opening in to a small hall incorporating the beautiful stone spiral staircase. The hall leads into the two rooms on the ground floor, a vast kitchen and large lounge. The terracotta floor in the lounge goes beautifully with the authentic French ceiling. An impressive stone fireplace is used to heat it. Several windows and a double-leaf door protected by railings and opening on to the garden illuminate the room. It communicates with the kitchen and its Roman concrete floor and French ceiling. A wooden trap door gives access to a wine cellar. A wooden door with its glazed upper section opens into the hall entrance.
The spiral staircase leads to two rooms. A bedroom with a French ceiling and anteroom has been organised in one of these rooms. It features terracotta floor tiles and a gorgeous stone fireplace. There is an adjoining bathroom and a toilet located on the landing that is shared with the second bedroom. This other room is spacious and luminous and also has a stone fireplace bearing a coat of arms. The coat of arms represents a crescent moon with a star and ear of golden corn, symbolising the money once used by villagers. This coat of arms represents the arms of a chivalrous 13th century family. The walls are whitewashed and the mullioned windows are framed with dressed stone. Again a terracotta floor matches the French ceiling perfectly.
There are two adjoining bedrooms. Both feature Renaissance style stone fireplaces. One of which bears a coat of arms representing an axe, symbolising justice served by the Provost. A bathroom; terracotta floor; French ceiling. The second suite with parquet flooring comprises a shower room and small adjoining storage room.
The spiral staircase continues up in to the attic. It leads in to a vast room under the steep roof spanning the whole length of the building. The exposed beams are the only decoration here. There is a wooden floor and it is illuminated by shed dormers. It would make an ideal loft conversion and thus increase the living space.
This building is unique thanks to its rich authentic Renaissance architecture and its unique history. Robust and reassuring, it appears to surround and protect not only its own inhabitants but also those in the village, thus forming the core of a small community deeply rooted in history. It is a human scale property, easy to live in with its six luminous and spacious rooms. The restoration works both inside and out are impeccable.
