In the Entre-Deux-Mers area, 25km to the south of Bordeaux (3 hours from Paris by train), on the edge of a small town with all services including a port on the river Garonne. A few hundred metres away from the local shops, on the banks of the Estey, a tributary of the Garonne.


The property spans some 1.1 hectares above a tributary of the Garonne.
This fortified mill forms a 12-metre sided cube with an adjoining house. It was renovated in 2002.
The house comes with a modern swimming pool and remarkable garden with several levels, textures and aspects.

The house

The house and the mill are separate entities. The entrance is in the house part. The stairs to the first floor are in a room with a fireplace. Toilets towards the back of the extension. The first two floors of the old flour mill have been converted. The various levels and rooms remain the same. The very thick walls are whitewashed stone All materials used are noble. The light floods in through the many windows and arrow slits and bounces off the thick walls.

Ground floor
The bottom of the mill is a large living/dining room with a fireplace and heavy exposed beams. A large window overlooks the reach below. This area leads on to the kitchen, which has a stainless steel island, a pantry and then on to a bedroom with another flight of stairs to the upper floors.
First floor
The rooms and their uses are influenced by the differences in level and the ceiling heights. First, there are three bedrooms with a corridor that leads directly outside, through a glazed door and a bathroom with toilet. On a split level, there are two large rooms with high ceilings that act as workshop and playroom, with a space to cook. The office-workshop covers the entire upper floor of the house part.
Second floor
The stairs in the playroom lead up to the last floor. A large landing lit by a roof light distributes four bedrooms each with its own ensuite shower room. The bedrooms are exactly the same size and shape but each one has a different wall décor, which was crafted during the 2002 renovations.

The garden

The mill spans the Estey, whose water powers the wheel. The hydraulic system was restored in 2002. A lock diverts part of the current towards the reach. Another lock is used to precisely adjust the force on the millstone. The whole garden is laid out around the technical installations, with terraces, islands, banks and woodland each with its own atmosphere and plants, lovingly cared for by the current owners. The whole garden can be accessed by tractor. The property plays on the different atmospheres created by the plants and trees. The grounds also include a chicken run, a large shed, a modern design swimming pool and a garage for six cars. A path winds between the various little worlds, which together form a unique haven, just a few metres away from the local shops. It is possible to bathe in the river.

Our opinion

The estate is steeped in history and has been renovated with great creativity, by the same imaginative power behind the distinctive Villa Majorelle in Marrakech. The ancestry of this building reveals itself furtively as one wanders among the ornamental bushes or on the high terraces created by the subtle arrangement of space and sources of light.
The power of the old walls and their dramatic past contrasts with the expert modern tastes of the current occupants.
Nestled in the middle of its extraordinary gardens, the house invites life’s travellers to moments of contemplation and dreams. An invitation one cannot refuse.
