An old, 18th century farmhouse in the typical Bresse style
with a swimming pool and a garden in south Burgundy

Chalon-sur-Saône, SAONE-ET-LOIRE burgundy 71100 FR

3⅓ hours from Paris, 2 hours from Geneva and 1⅓ hours from Lyon, a few kilometres to the south of Châlons-sur-Saône, this farmhouse stands not far from a motorway intersection between these destinations. The village, a small market town with 1,600 inhabitants, has shops and local amenities as well as infant and junior schools.

This property is the former outbuilding of a middle-class house, built during the 18th century. It comprises a farmhouse with a courtyard and a garden, all enclosed by walls. A lane provides access to the courtyard, spread out in front of the farmhouse and closed by gates. The house is in a recent district, but its setting makes it discreet. It is completely out of sight of onlookers. The main house is extended out the back by a wooded garden with a tall central tree and a swimming pool. A small shed at the end of the garden is used for storing garden tools and furniture.

The typical Bresse style farmhouse

This home was originally a farmhouse with an old dwelling and one or two barns which are now converted into the current dwelling and a carport. It therefore comprises a single central building with an upstairs, built of stone and half-timbering. It is topped with a gable roof featuring overhanging eaves and covered with flat Burgundy tiles. Facade shed and roof dormers, cutting into the overhang of the eaves, let copious amounts of light into the upstairs rooms. The front facade, featuring a French window and a rectangular picture window, has an overhanging eave forming an open carport with a roof. The rear facade features rectangular windows and a section of the old barn is closed by a wide picture window.

Ground floor
The large entrance opens into a room, with a cathedral ceiling, set out under an exposed roofing framework. This room, with Burgundy stone tiles, is heated by a monumental fireplace in good working order and features a bar area. It is closed by an old carriage doorway which now houses a large picture window looking out over the garden. Inside, a superb, dressed stone spiral stairway leads upstairs. This room also opens, on the side, into a hall area that provides access to two bedrooms, a toilet and a kitchen. It is possible to glimpse the kitchen through an opening set in the wall of the main room. The kitchen floor is covered with Burgundy tiles and the walls are painted a Provencal yellow. One of the bedrooms opens on to the garden whilst the second overlooks the courtyard. The floors are carpeted with terracotta tiles in the hall area.
First floor
This floor is reached via a dressed stone spiral stairway which separates the level into two large sections. On one side is a large, partially renovated bedroom, currently in use as a study, as well as three other bedrooms and a bathroom with a toilet. On the other side, a last bedroom, currently undergoing renovation works, provides access to the attic space.
An attic space on the first floor of the house could be converted.

The carport

The carport, adjoining the main house and opening on to the courtyard, has a roof.

Our opinion

Even though the brick, usually used when constructing farmhouses in the typical Bresse style, is missing in this instance, this residence will appeal to enthusiasts courtesy of its architecture which is very characteristic of that in the south of Burgundy. Ideally located in a market town with shops, this property with its garden and its swimming pool is a pleasant place to live in the shelter of tall trees whose shade protects residents and children playing outside during hot weather. Obviously a family home, its rooms have been cleverly laid out such that the large number of bedrooms created could accommodate several generations in a modest, comfortable setting.
