In the centre of the Loire Valley, a little under two hours from Paris by car, 1 hour from Chartres and from Orleans, 45 minutes from Blois and 15 minutes from Châteaudun. 30 minutes from a TGV train station with 45-minute links to Paris. In the middle of a lively village, with just over 500 inhabitants, 4 km from the shops.


At the end of a shallow, wooded valley, where some superb houses are concealed, flows a secret, wild river which delimits one side of the property. The other side opens on to the main village street. The house and three barns, once used by a roofing company, are near to one another whilst providing a leisure area spanning approx. 5,500 m². This property has undergone several extensions. Its current owner, an architect by trade, has reorganised the property in order to be able to accommodate guests whilst preserving his privacy. Also an artist, he has transformed the barn adjoining the house into an exhibition gallery.

The house and the barn

Airy and luminous outside as well as inside under their slate roofs, the house and its barn are adjoining and intercommunicating. The first is used for accommodation purposes and the second as a reception and exhibition area.

Ground floor
It is entered via the atrium window which opens directly into the exhibition hall and a reception area spanning approx. 125 m². The walls still have their original appearance and as there is no upstairs, the sloping ceilings are lined with willow latticework. The floors throughout the barn and the house are uniformly covered with large, charcoal grey tiles that contrast with the white walls and enhance the sober, refined, contemporary style whilst making the rooms appear even bigger. LED lighting, some of which is triggered by movement detectors, is set in the ceilings of each ground floor room. The exhibition room is extended by four living rooms, the last one opening on to the garden. A door separates the first room from the second and another wide sliding door separates the second from the third when necessary.
The west side of this level spans 76 m², taken up by utility rooms.

First floor
The stairway goes up to a landing, one of the doors of which opens on to another stairway leading up to the attic space. The other doors open into three small flats, each one comprising an entrance hall, a bedroom, a shower room and a toilet. One flat also has a dressing room and another has an anteroom.
Second floor
The stairway going up to the attic space leads to a bedroom, spanning 25 m² of living space, with a shower room and a toilet, as well as to a study.
The two other barns belonging to the property still have their original cladding, now attractively marked with the patina of time. One is used as a garage and a storage area, the other has been converted into a 52 m² studio flat on the ground floor, topped upstairs with a 28 m² study.

Our opinion

Emile Zola appreciated this small valley, attractively located on the borders of the Perche and Beauce regions. This extremely relaxing setting, respectful of its surroundings, encourages residents to put their deckchairs out by the side of the house and meditate whilst listening to the clear flowing water and the rippling of the many springs that feed the stream. It is equally as pleasant inside as outside the house which has been tastefully restored in keeping with the site and its past. Harmonious and full of charm, it could continue accommodating guests as part of the bed & breakfast activity as its conversion as well as its fixtures and fittings have been well thought out. It is also ideal for housing works of art as the premises are currently well-suited to the task. It will, in any event, make a superb large family home.
