Description

This property, enclosed by ivy-covered walls, is reached through white gates opening on to a gravel alleyway, bordered with lime trees and St John’s Wort. The driveway goes in front of a copse before reaching the residence which stretches from east to west, from a bread oven to a summer kitchen. A grassy parterre, planted with many species of scented roses, is flanked by a crenelated hornbeam hedge. At the end of the plot, behind hydrangea bushes, cypress and other ornamental trees, stands an outbuilding used for storage purposes and a barn in use as a garage. On the other side of the residence, the garden featuring terraces, a vegetable patch, an orchard with apple, pear, cherry and walnut trees is bordered by hedges separating the property from neighbouring grasslands. This gently sloping section looks down on the Loir Valley.

The residence

The central building, constructed in the 15th century, is flanked in the middle by a square turret and has small 17th century pavilions on either side. The roofs are covered with small tiles. It features casement and half-casement windows whilst its stone and quarry stone blocks are partially covered with an ochre rendering. Virginia creeper, honeysuckle, lavender and asters provide colour and fragrance.

Ground floor
This residence is entered via the tower which once housed the stairway. It opens into a superb through reception room exuding a variety of atmospheres created by exposed beams, framed terracotta floor tiles, a large brick and freestone fireplace, a central stairway and casement windows with indoor shutters. A semi-glazed door opens into a kitchen which takes up the pavilion on the east side. This bright, comfortable room includes a fireplace and a bread oven. Two wonderful old doors provide access to a red and white shower room and to a back kitchen. Semi-glazed doors on the west side lead to a laundry room and to a summer dining room which opens via a large picture window on to the terrace and the summer kitchen.
First floor
A large gallery at the top of the stairs is used a study. Brick and half-timbering bring the Sologne style to mind. A bedroom with a shower and toilet, laid out in the tower, is next to a bigger bedroom with a fireplace, a bathroom fitted with a shower and a toilet.
Second floor
This level, under the rafters, opens on to a landing room with a corridor leading to three bedrooms and a shower room with a toilet.
Basement
Outside steps go down to a gavelled cellar which spans the full floor surface area of the central building. Wine and fruit can be stored here in optimal conditions. One room houses a boiler.

Our opinion

In the land of Pierre-de-Ronsard, this old seigneurial home is certainly not like those flowers that last “Only from dawn till dusk” in the words of the poet. But who can tell whether his Ode to Cassandra was written in this rose garden, at the foot of a residence which was already a century old when he was born? The hamlet surrounding it is no doubt little changed judging by its authentic rural appearance. An hour from Paris-Montparnasse via TGV train, just a stone’s throw from a medium-sized town with a rich past, not a single nuisance exists to disrupt the serenity of these old walls steeped in a delightfully pastoral setting.
