In Donnemarie-Dontilly, on the heights of the village, facing its cloisters. Shops, schools, etc. are just a stone’s throw away. The market town is ideally located between the prestigious medieval town of Provins (17 km), classified as a World Heritage site by Unesco, and the royal town of Fontainebleau (35 km). The French capital is but 78 km away via the N19.
The 2-storey dwelling
This dwelling takes up the two uppers floors of the building, but the “second floor” is, in fact, set out all on a level with the garden. It is entered via a wide gate opening off the street facing the cloisters, and then via an entrance door, the architraves and the double-lintel of which are made from sculpted stone. The house is built of stone with quarry block quoins, the roof is covered with local flat tiles and the windows are topped with oak wood lintels. A lean-to adjoining the house contains the boiler room.
The garage and the cellar
The garage, spanning approx. 10 m² and comprising a workshop, opens not only on to the street but also into the garden with its well. Its door conceals a surprise as it opens on to a flight of seven steps leading to a superb vaulted wine cellar.
The second house
This building adjoins the garage. It exudes as much character as the rest of the property with its stone walls and its local flat tile roof. This fully renovated house spans two levels and is set out around the garden.
Full of nooks and crannies as well as mysteries and memories, this property bears the mark of a woman’s hand: the current mistress of the premises can talk for hours about how her mother’s family lived there and how some of the rooms have changed over the years. Each generation added its own gentle touch but all respected its beauty and harmony. Carefully tended by its owner, the garden is both refined and yet abundant. It has a character and an aura all of its own which, transmitted down through the ages, can but last in this slightly magical atmosphere which is, of course, steeped in history. The outbuilding has very recently undergone conversion works so that it can be used for friends or passing guests.
