To the south of the Quercy region, near to Cahors, a town of art and history. An area with gently undulating countryside where hills covered with pubescent oak trees as well as boxwood, hazel tree and juniper undergrowth alternate with barer areas, providing glimpses of the white limestone, symbolic of this part of the former province. There where numerous rivers and streams have gouged fertile valleys in which cereal crops, fruit and vines are grown. The architectural heritage is outstanding with medieval fortified “bastide” towns, hilltop villages, castles, Romanesque churches, Gallo-Roman vestiges and windmills. The Valentré bridge is classified as a World Heritage site by Unesco. Saint-Etienne cathedral, the medieval villages of Montpezat, Castelnau-Montratier, Lauzerte and the keeps of Montcuq and Luzech, as well as other examples of the region’s artistic wealth. Agen and Toulouse (future fast train stations and international airports) are some 70 minutes away; Cahors and Montauban are about 30 minutes away; Lalbenque, one of the truffle capitals is less than 20 minutes away.
This house, no doubt constructed in the 19th century on older foundations, is built of regional white stone and topped with a so-called Mediterranean roof composed of Roman tiles. Both facades are discreet and feature numerous windows that let in copious amounts of light.
Originally, the ground and first floor stood above two basement levels. These have since been cleverly converted, making the space created quite functional and welcoming. Directly accessed from the terraced garden on the south side, it is independent from the rest of the dwelling.
With a wealth of experience in rehabilitating old residences, the current owners have tastefully and comfortably restored the interior. It spans 229 m² of living space. The chosen, resolutely refined style is a clever combination of the old with the contemporary. It enhances the quality of the materials used and the period features that have been scrupulously preserved.
The main rooms include a lounge, a dining room, a large kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 shower rooms and a study (approx. 20 m²) or possibly an additional bedroom, a reading room and a laundry-linen room.
The decorative style adopted perfectly enhances the old preserved features such as terracotta floor tiles, flagstones, French ceilings, old doors, fireplaces with their moulded trumeaux, wall recesses, a reused carved wooden trumeau and an unusual sculpture standing on a base atop the main stairway’s landing post.
A search for a tasteless feature within this tall stone building would be in vain. The pure lines of its contemporary decor reflect the soberness of the facades. They enhance an old elegance. The know-how of the current owners as regards the conversion of the premises is immediately obvious. Great advantage has been taken of the slope with the garden terracing. The neighbours are but the surrounding countryside and the sky.
