character houses for sale - chatou - french department of yvelines

A 270 m², late 19th century family home and its wonderful garden
on a peaceful private street in Chatou

Chatou, YVELINES paris 78400 FR

The town of Chatou, in the French department of Yvelines, developed in the 19th century when the opening of the railway line made it a sought-after holiday resort. Wealthy Parisians built numerous villas there. Artists and intellectuals were quickly attracted by the charm of the islet and the ever wild banks of the river Seine, ideal for boating and bathing. Local dance-halls made it possible to eat and dance. Such surroundings and such a way of life could not escape impressionist painters who created a cultural attraction in the district which is still there today.

This house is ideally set along a private road, 12 minutes’ walk from the town centre, in the peace and quiet but near to everything: shops, schools, cultural centres, a train station, etc. Constructed at the end of the late 19th century in a neo-classical style, it has recently been extended and undergone full, first-class renovation works. The landscaped garden, with its ornamental pool, created in 2008, bears witness to the refinement of the premises.
In its 836 m² natural setting, this residence spans 270 m² of living space, including five bedrooms and a 47 m² flat. The ground floor comprises a veranda, an entrance hall, a cloakroom with a wash-hand basin, a guest toilet, a study with panelling, a lounge with a marble fireplace, a dining room, a library and a kitchen. Upstairs are five bedrooms, two of which have their own shower room and toilet, a large bathroom with a bath and a shower, two separate toilets and an attic. The basement includes two vaulted cellars, a laundry room, a small wine cellar and a flat comprising a bedroom, a shower room with a wash-hand basin and a toilet as well as a large living room.
The original rich interior decor has been preserved or recreated: moulding, cornices and ceiling roses with decorative staffs, solid oak wood doorways, skirting and cupboards. The house is fitted with two alarm systems and burglar-proof double-glazing.
It is completed by a large garage.
This property is 12 minutes’ walk and 5 minutes by bike from the town centre and its RER line A train station which has links to the business sector in La-Défense taking 11 minutes, to Place-de-l’Etoile taking 15 minutes and to Saint-Germain-en-Laye taking 10 minutes. State schools are but 5 minutes away on foot, the Perceval or Jeanne-d’Arc-Notre-Dame private schools are 10 minutes away. By car or by bike, it takes 7 minutes to get to Le-Bon-Sauveur school in Vésinet and 13 minutes to get to the British-School-of-Paris in Croissy-sur-Seine. The centre of the French capital is but 20 minutes away via the N13 or the A86 and A14 motorways.

The house

This house, constructed in the 1880’s, combines the style of Louis XIII, featuring alternate strips of stone and brick, with the classicism of its pilaster flanked openings. The Mansard roof features two shed dormers topped with moulded triangular pediments. The quoins are made of stone. The recent extension was carried out in the same vein, in keeping with the old architecture and with a touch of modernity.
The garden provides the house with a verdant setting.

Ground floor
Residents enter via an elegant, glass and wrought iron veranda. It opens into a vestibule which provides access to several rooms with stone floors, featuring marble inlaid decoration. On the left-hand side is a built-in cloakroom with a wash-hand basin and a guest toilet. On the right-hand side is a study or a small lounge, adorned with oak wood panelling which opens on to the garden. Straight on, a large lounge with a pink marble fireplace is extended by a through dining room, with access to the garden. It is enhanced with oak wood bookshelves. These reception rooms feature Versailles pattern parquet flooring made from old materials. The kitchen can be reached from the entrance hall or from the dining room. With its vaulted ceiling, its ceramic tiles, its abbey stone floor and its Hauteville stone work surfaces, it is both solemn and welcoming.
First floor
A wooden stairway with wrought iron railings goes upstairs. The first floor comprises two bedrooms with parquet flooring, one of which has its own shower room and toilet, as well as a separate toilet. A large, family bathroom is fitted with an Italian style shower, with a solid stone shower tray, a cast iron bath and a vanity unit with two wash-hand basins. This bathroom, with a stone floor inlaid with royal pink and grey marble decoration, opens on to a roof terrace which could be converted.
Second floor
This landing provides access to three bedrooms, all with parquet flooring, as well as to a separate toilet. One of the bedrooms has its own shower room with a toilet whilst another has private access to the attic which could be converted into a games or projection room.
Just like the ground floor, the basement was extended during the recent works. It is semi-underground and most of the rooms are illuminated via openings. In the old section are two vaulted stone cellars, a laundry-boiler room, a small wine cellar and a larder. In the recent section, a 47 m² flat with a basement courtyard area could easily be made independent. It comprises a bedroom, a shower room with a wash-hand basin and a toilet as well as a large living room which is very bright courtesy of its three windows.

The garden

This landscaped garden was created in 2008. It comprises an ornamental pool adorned with old bricks, numerous boxwood and decoratively trimmed bushes, lots of old rose bushes, peonies, iris, waterlilies, papyrus and water plants. Amongst the trees and shrubs are oak, lime, sweet gum, hornbeam, pyramid hornbeam, ginkgo biloba, Judas, magnolia, lilac and hazelnut trees as well as vines and wisteria. All are planted around alleyways and a terrace with old paving. The garden is fitted with lighting and automatic watering systems.

Our opinion

As of the garden, it is possible to see that the recent renovation works were tastefully carried out with great attention to detail. The 19th century architecture and interior decor are a permanent feast for the eyes. This house fills its residents with feelings of pride and great satisfaction. It is an invitation to daydream. The town is nearby or faraway depending on the wishes of the home owners who are removed from the hustle and bustle without being isolated.
