Amongst the elegant, airy towns laid out to the west of Paris, on either side of the meandering Seine, is Bougival with its 9,000 inhabitants. Porte-Maillot is 15 km away; the Château-de-Versailles is 10 km away. Bougival is in the midst of the “Pays des Impressionnistes” (Land of the Impressionists), a French label created in 2002. Its landscapes were of great inspiration to Claude-Monet: he painted the river in all lights in all seasons. As did Camille-Pissarro. An era when everyone in the town had a good time and Auguste-Renoir sketched dancers. The hedonism incited by the beauty of the premises has not been lost in one and a half centuries. Great names from French gastronomy, like the pioneer of “Nouvelle Cuisine”, Jean-Delaveyne, lived in the town. Their successors have not put them to shame.

Description

This house bears witness to a time when citizens came here to find natural surroundings; there is moreover still an 11 ha park in the town. Around 1850, it was a hunting lodge. Its style is distinctly Anglo-Norman: exposed contour and profile of a different colour to that of the walls, a hip slate roof, bow windows, carved overhanging roofing frameworks, latticework wooden railings at the windows and balconies. The additions that were made over the years have not changed its initial aesthetics. It spans a total of 745 m² over three levels. The grounds extend over 4,200 m².
The ground floor comprises vast, through living rooms that open on to a terrace via large picture windows. Upstairs are five bedrooms and their bathrooms, a master suite, two studies, two shower rooms and four dressing rooms. The basement includes three exercise rooms, a hammam, a projection room with a bar, a wine cellar and a 2-car garage.
A caretaker’s cottage stands at the entrance to the property.

The house

The Anglo-Norman style is reflected in its openings, its bow windows and its balconies, together with the gardens and the swimming pool surrounding it.


Ground floor
The entrance is under a pergola which runs the length of this facade, adding a Mediterranean touch to the property. The large vestibule has warm-coloured stone floor tiles. On the left-hand side, the dining room as well as the refined, ultra-modern fixtures and fittings in the kitchen form a harmonious through area spanning 60 m². Straight on, the equally big lounge opens via three French windows on to the light of a 100 m² terrace.
The contemporary, stone fireplace is an invitation to settle down and meditate whilst watching the flames or to read, the library being close at hand.
The adjoining pool-house and summer kitchen are panelled and have African Milletia wood parquet flooring. They provide direct access to the covered swimming pool.

First floor
A wooden stairway goes up from the vestibule. The first floor landing provides access to two large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. A third, 30 m² bedroom has a bathroom decorated by one of the most famous marble layers in the Greater Paris Area. Long dressing room units exude originality; one has been installed under a bow window.
Second floor
Two good-sized bedrooms, with their own bathrooms overlook the garden whilst two others are currently in use as dressing rooms. The ceilings in both studies follow the sloping shape of the roof. A shower room adds even more comfort. A hatch provides access to an attractive converted attic.
Basement
It is possible to access the basement from the pool-house via a little stairway. Three rooms, including two spanning 40 m², are currently given over to exercise which can be intense. A hammam, with mosaic walls and providing an oriental air, is there as a promise of a reward, just like the 30 m² projection room with its bar. A wine cellar, a laundry room, a boiler room, a machine room and a 2-car garage complete this level.
The garden
The garden, or rather the gardens are on all sides of the house. The grounds are walled. One hundred year old trees have kept an eye on the successive happy owners. Palm and fig trees confirm that some had the south of France or the mild ocean climate in mind. A sober balustrade forming a nymphaeum surrounds an ornamental pool with a Baroque air, topped with a shell-shaped bowl in which a cherub is clasping a fish.
The swiming pool
With a translucent, vaulted cover, the swimming pool spans almost 100 m². Its picture windows open on to a south-facing terrace.

The caretaker's cottage

This building, standing at the property entrance, also reflects the Anglo-Norman style. It is accessed via one of those verandas, typical of the 19th century, that resemble not only a conservatory but also an industrial building. Spanning 84 m², this house comprises a lounge and a dining room with an open-plan kitchen on the ground floor and two bedrooms as well as a bathroom upstairs. The basement includes a laundry room, a shower room and a garage.

Our opinion

This residence has everything going for it: its location, its history, its style, the variety of its indoor and outdoor areas and its exceptional comfort. Visitors are immediately aware of its pleasant way of life, like an expansion of body and soul. The caretaker’s cottage exudes potential. This small haven is just a short distance from the French capital.
