In rural Provence, between Aix-en-Provence and Verdon Gorges,
a 14th century, 300 m² mill on the riverside
Aix-en-Provence, BOUCHES-DU-RHONE provence-cote-dazur 13090 FR

Location

At the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain nature reserve and near to Verdon Nature Park and Saint-Croix Lake, 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence and its TGV train station, 10 minutes from the motorway and 50 minutes from Marignane airport, in the centre of one of rural Provence’s lively villages, with all shops and amenities.

Description

A wide gateway provides access from the street to a driveway protected by an arbour. The latter extends to a shady car parking area, able to take several cars. A wicket gate also lets pedestrians access a flight of stone steps, attached to the wall of the building on the road side.
This restored mill, with its 300 m² of living space, is bordered by a courtyard steeped in light. It keeps a jealous eye on a densely wooded, 2,500 m² plot of land, in a verdant setting with a babbling river bordering the property. The sound of the river is rudely interrupted by waterfalls splashing on the rocks. The interlacing foliage conceals this wonderful property from curious onlookers.
A pergola lies dormant in the midst of the lawn and the shade of the walnut trees provides a welcome coolness under the hot Provencal sun.

The mill

This L-shaped building spans a total living space of approx. 300 m² over two levels. It comprises one building, with origins dating back to the 14th century, and a later section set at right angles.

Ground floor
Directly accessed via a door opening on the road side or via an indoor stairway from the ground floor, this level comprises four bedrooms reached via a hallway. Each of the vast, recently renovated bedrooms has its own shower room and toilet. The floors are covered with terracotta tiles and the ceilings feature exposed beams in all of the rooms.

Cottage
Located upstairs in the side section of the building, it can be directly accessed from the street via a wrought iron gate.
It spans a total of 35 m², comprises two rooms and is totally independent from the main part of the house.

The parklands

The grounds, spanning 2,500 m², are laid out on either side of the building. They are divided into two gardens. Visitors, entering the property via the main gateway extended by an arbour, discover densely wooded parklands, bordered by a river, providing a wonderful view of the mill facade and terrace. A pathway at each end provides access to the river banks.
The second, smaller garden on the other side of the building can be accessed via the kitchen or directly via a wicket gate and a passageway that runs alongside the lounge’s east-facing terrace. This delightful, verdant area, simply lined with flower beds and overlooking the river without providing an access, has a much cosier character.

Our opinion

Near to Aix-en-Provence which can very easily be reached via the motorway, this haven of coolness, steeped in restful peace and quiet, is on the very edge of the Upper Provence region with its picturesque sites. The residence could well have Knights Templar origins, but the spectacular vestiges of its former oil production alone give this property an undeniable style. Separated from the village by the river and the foliage of the trees bordering it, this sober, robust building offers a lovely private setting, shrouded in mystery, just a stone’s throw from the shops as well as the hustle and bustle of an authentic Provencal village.
