An oil mill
on the river in Provence
Aix-en-Provence, BOUCHES-DU-RHONE provence-cote-dazur 13090 FR

At the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence and its TGV train station, 10 minutes from the motorway and 50 minutes from Marignane airport, in the centre of a village with all shops and amenities.

A restored mill with 300 m² of living space set in 2,500 m² of grounds bordering a river.

The mill

Spanning approx. 300 m² over two floors, this edifice comprises one building with a more recent extension set at right angles.

Ground floor
In a side section of the ground floor are a bedroom and an adjoining study, complete with a shower room; all of which face the garden.
But this floor is predominantly taken up by a vast lounge. It forms a living room of almost 100 m² that covers the entire floor surface area of the original section of the mill.
This vaulted room, featuring terracotta floor tiles and adorned with a fireplace in proportion to its size, is symbolically divided in the middle by the monumental mechanism of the old press.
At one end of the room, at the foot of a straight, masonry stairway leading upstairs, is the old grinding stone and its receptacle which indisputably acts as a reminder of the premises’ original vocation.
A few steps lead to the kitchen.
Overlooking the garden and a covered terrace, it features a wide window divided into panes like an atrium.

First floor
Directly accessed via a door opening on to a quiet street or via an indoor stairway from the ground floor, this floor comprises four bedrooms reached via a short corridor. Each of the vast, recently renovated bedrooms has its own shower room and toilet.
Located upstairs in the building’s side section, it can be directly accessed from the street via a wrought iron gate.
It spans a total of 35 m², comprises two rooms and is totally independent from the main part of the house.

The parklands
The building effectively cuts the 2,500 m² of grounds, extending on either side, into two gardens.
Visitors, entering the property via the gates extended by an arbour, find themselves in the first and biggest of the two gardens. Surrounded by trees on the river side, it provides a pleasant view of the mill. A pathway at each end provides access to the river banks.
The second garden on the other side of the building can be accessed via the kitchen or directly from the outside via a small terrace. This small garden, simply lined with flower beds and overlooking the river without providing an access, is much more private.

Our opinion

Really close to Aix-en-Provence which can easily be reached via the motorway, on the very threshold of the Upper Provence region and its ever-fashionable sites, a haven of coolness and restful peace and quiet. The residence could well have Knights Templar origins, but the spectacular vestiges of its former oil production alone give this property an undeniable style.
Unquestionably separated from the village by the river and the foliage of the trees that border it, this sober, solid building offers a setting of privacy somewhat shrouded in mystery, just a stone’s throw from the shops and the accompanying lifestyle.
