Location

This property, between Provence and the French Riviera, in the Maures Mountain forest, equidistant from two tourist villages, is but 15 km from the Mediterranean beaches. Constructed on a large plateau, where vines grow on the edge of the forest, this traditional Mas house is undoubtedly in a peaceful setting with a rare view of the Rocher-des-Trois-Croix (the rock with three crosses). Although appearing to be isolated, it is nevertheless part of a residential district, with several other traditional Mas and Bastide houses, all discreetly nestling in rare French Riveria countryside. The site, its flora and fauna is in a classified and protected area, far from any town development plans for many years to come. This traditional stone house is reached via a narrow, winding, little-used road. It is 4 km from a village to the east and 1.5 km from another to the west. Both directions make it possible to get to main roads and motorway slip roads in less than 10 minutes. The southern climate, with its 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, is pleasantly tempered during the summer months by the sea breeze. Saint-Tropez is 35 km away and can be easily reached via shuttle boat from Issambres’ port. Nice International airport is 40 minutes away and a TGV train station is 18 km away.

Description


The stone sheepfold

This sheepfold is built of exposed stone and its main beams are whole tree trunks. White walls contrast with its original floors, still covered with terracotta tiles. The living room with a sloping ceiling has an open-plan fitted kitchen. On a lower level, forming an open space, are a bedroom and a private bathroom. There is a cellar in the basement. The terrace is shaded by umbrella pine trees. The sheepfold is at a distance from the other houses, making it more private.

The pool house

This modern “pool house” with its flat roof was built in a designer style with vegetation on the walls. Its terrace communicates all on a level with the swimming pool deck. Two bedrooms, one of which forms a suite with its bathroom and its bath installed in the bedroom. A living room with a fireplace and a kitchen area, a room with contemporary French windows opening on to the natural surroundings and the swimming pool.

The forest house

With four rooms, this is a convivial house. The through living room blends in with the vegetation courtesy of its open picture windows, providing an excellent view of the cork oak trees planted near to the house. It has a modern fireplace. Three bedrooms, each with a bathroom. The house opens on to shady terraces near to the swimming pool.

The caretaker’s cottage

Standing at the entrance to the property, its plain, functional rooms comprise a living room with an open-plan kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom. It also has a terrace and an enclosed garden.

The parklands

The grounds spanning four hectares comprise flat, shady areas, free of any audible or visual nuisances. This rare, unspoilt space is, in turn, part of a vast preserved nature reserve.

Our opinion

The estate surroundings are of such an exceptional quality that it is not unusual to see Hermann’s tortoises, an endangered species, wandering around. Specific to the Maures Mountains, they live here in the wild. Amongst the various buildings comprising the property is an old stone shed which has been completely and tastefully renovated in pure Provencal tradition. The other houses, although more recent, blend discretely with their natural surroundings. They constitute quite an unusual property with all the comfort and tranquillity that its residents could wish for just thirty minutes from the Saint-Tropez beaches.
