30 minutes from Fréjus beach and the seafront, in the town of Draguignan, sub-prefecture of the French department of Var. This old, traditional Mas house, standing in the forest, is at the end of a narrow scenic route bordered by high stone walls, just like the old seasonal migration paths, known locally as “drailles”. A level, well-kept dirt track, some hundred metres long, provides access to the house. Facing the hills in the Selves and Malmont ranges, this traditional Mas house is constructed on a wide plateau, extended by a garden set out in front of the house. Two entrances, each with gates, provide access for all types of vehicles. The town of Draguignan is 2 km away, Les-Arcs TGV train station is 11 km away and Saint-Raphaël is 30 minutes away. The main roads passing nearby include the A8 motorway, the St-Tropez-Le-Muy exit of which is but 15 minutes away.
Nice international airport is about 50 minutes away.
The traditional Provencal Mas house
The ground floor area of this old traditional Mas house has been increased by a more recent extension. The upstairs can be reached via an old stairway with solid steps covered with octagonal terracotta tiles and featuring oak wood nosing.
The swimming pool
Constructed with its pool-house a short distance from the house, the swimming pool is protected by safety fencing. An adjoining covered courtyard is used as a games room.
The outbuildings include a stone garden shed and another outbuilding adjoining the main house, in use as a cellar.
The main asset of this traditional Mas house is its setting: amidst peaceful countryside, it has no audible or visual nuisances. The inside provides a level of home comfort that is acceptable but it is in need of a minimum of attention. The new owners could, however, decide to extend the house and increase its living space to more than 500 m² as planning permission for this as well as the installation of solar panels and the raising of the main dwelling has recently been granted. The old cowshed, an exposed stone, vaulted room, has been preserved and the original materials of the house partly saved, although they could do with undergoing enhancement works to create a more authentic appearance overall. The olive trees on the terracing are in need of regular attention in order to provide a more abundant harvest.
This site is the ideal size for a main residence or even to be used for seasonal tourist activities, Draguignan being along the route through the Verdon Gorges.
