The hills around Lyon on the outskirts of the Gauls’ former capital, eastern edge of the Massif-Central, are part of an upland region going up to an altitude a little over 900 m. Its slopes can be steep; the general lines are gentler. The view over Lyon, over the Vivarais, Velay, Le-Forez and the Beaujolais areas, can sometimes be stunning. A vast zone of highly productive orchards then gives way to farming and, above all, the raising of animals.
This property has been part of a hamlet since the 17th century. It takes an hour to get here from Lyon, itself 2 hours from Paris via TGV train. Saint-Exupéry international airport is 75 minutes away.


This hamlet is 5 minutes outside of a little lively town with some 3,000 inhabitants, together with all shops and amenities. Constructed around 1690 by a wealthy family of farmer-merchants, this property comprises a residence and its outbuilding in a garden spanning approx. 2,500 m². Farmers in the 17th century raised livestock and produced wine. In the house’s cellar is a vat reserved for pressing grapes which bears witness to this past activity: it is the only one known to exist in the area.

The house

This house, completely constructed from stone, spans three levels. Some corner stones are dated and marked by the old builders. The facades feature numerous openings. Small-paned windows look out over the garden. The hip roof is covered with old Roman terracotta tiles.

Ground floor
The heavy wooden entrance door is set in the middle of the building. It opens into a vestibule, paved with terracotta floor tiles. The walls feature lime rendering and the wooden stairway is old. The uneven steps have been left in their original condition. A studded, wooden door at the end of the vestibule opens into a cloakroom with a shower and a toilet. It provides internal access to the house’s wine cellar.
The vestibule also leads to two reception rooms, a kitchen with a dining room and a lounge. The vast lounge abounds in authentic features such as a French ceiling and terracotta floor tiles. An old fireplace takes up a section of one wall with an adjoining, perfectly preserved well. A glazed door opens on to an outside terrace.
Opposite, the dining room is set out around an old monumental fireplace, in front of which, stone flagstones are laid like a parvis. Next to it is a stone potager (a secondary hearth where soups and other previously prepared dishes were cooked on embers), also in pristine condition. The exposed ceiling beams contribute to this room’s warm, welcoming and rustic atmosphere. The kitchen area is installed in a corner and a door leads to a back kitchen. Another door, with small panes and a stone doorstep, opens on to a gravel courtyard, facing the outbuilding.

First floor
The old wooden stairway goes up to the first floor. This level comprises five bedrooms as well as a bathroom and a separate toilet. The parquet flooring has been covered with a thick carpet in three of the bedrooms. The master bedroom is far more spacious. It comprises an old fireplace as well as a ceiling with exposed beams, just like the rest of this level. The wooden stairway continues up to the top floor.
Second floor
The second floor is laid out under the rafters and is illuminated by little, small-paned windows. It has parquet flooring throughout. The four rooms on this level feature sloping ceilings and the heavy roofing framework.

The outbuilding

The outbuilding, separated from the house via a little gravel courtyard, is a stone construction spanning two levels. Built on the edge and the entrance to the property, it houses the garage as well as the boiler room and a DIY workshop. The upstairs is laid out as a mezzanine and is currently used as an attic.

Our opinion

This wonderful stone house, looking somewhat like a country residence, has regularly spaced openings under overhanging eaves. The farmer who had it constructed at the very end of the 17th century was obviously wealthy. It currently displays a good balance between the old omnipresent features and modern-day home comforts. Balance also characterises this little region, both prosperous and tranquil as well as rural, despite being so very close to a very large and beautiful city. The moderate relief of the surrounding countryside is ideal for walking and cycling in order to admire old houses, like this one, where elegance is unpretentious.
