An artist’s home, with views of the river, and
a terrace-garden by the side of the Loire

Saumur, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 49400 FR
Centre

Location

This house is in the midst of one of France’s “most beautiful villages” and is very near to another “beautiful village” with shops, amenities and a weekly market. 20 minutes from Saumur and Chinon, an hour from Tours and Angers. Saumur train station provides links to both these towns, on the TGV train line (about ten daily return journeys between Angers and Paris taking 90 minutes and between Tours and Paris taking an hour). 15 minutes from the A85.

Description

The entrance gates to this property are in a narrow village street. They open on to a garden-terrace which runs alongside the entire main facade of the house, backing on to a hillside. This former 17th century farmhouse, built in two sections, stands facing and dominating the river Loire. There are numerous points of view over the river and its banks from the house and the garden, in addition to views of the church and the village castle.

The house

This house, constructed from freestone, is composed of two buildings, one slightly higher than the other. They are extended by a little outbuilding, adjoining one of the gable walls. It is topped with gable, slate roofs. Predominantly facing the river Loire, the facade of the higher section, symmetrically laid out in relation to its central bay, is flanked by pilasters, rising up half its total height, and enhanced with a modillion cornice. Said central bay features two French windows, with moulded arcades, and a roof dormer. The French window on the first floor is fitted with wrought iron railings.

Ground floor
The entrance hall, housing a first spiral metal stairway, provides access to a vast living room and a hall area. Throughout the hall and the living room, currently laid out as a lounge, a dining room and a kitchen, are Chauvigny stone tiles, exposed ceiling beams, two freestone fireplaces and a second single wooden flight, quarter-turning stairway. The hall area leads to a toilet with a wash-hand basin, a small laundry room and a study. The living room and the study open directly out on to the garden.
First floor
The wooden stairway landing provides access to a shower room with a toilet and two bedrooms. One of the two bedrooms communicates with a room currently in use as an artist’s studio which can also be reached via the metal stairway. This level features terracotta floor tiles and exposed ceiling beams throughout. One of the bedrooms has a black marble fireplace whilst the other has a freestone fireplace. The artist’s studio, with a 5.4 m high ridge in one section, has a French window opening on to a semi-circular balcony on the west side.
Second floor
The wooden stairway goes directly up into a bedroom with a bathroom. The bedroom has parquet flooring and the bathroom old cement tiles. The bedroom is extended by a hall area which can also be reached via the metal stairway. It provides access to a toilet, with a wash-hand basin, and to a bedroom on a mezzanine above the artist’s studio.

The outbuilding

The outbuilding, adjoining the east gable wall of the house, is closed by a large atrium. Spanning two levels, it is currently used for housing the boiler and the oil tank as well as for storage purposes.

The garden-terrace

The garden, entirely laid out in front of the house and closed on three sides, opens as a terrace overlooking the Loire. It also provides a view of the church and the village castle.

Our opinion

Superb white freestone takes pride of place in the village and this house is no exception. The wide river Loire, with its permanent or temporary islets, changes in accordance with the season or the time of day and immediately attracts the eye. Most of the rooms in this residence, currently home to an artist, look out over the river. It could easily accommodate a family. A bed & breakfast activity could be justified not only by the site itself but also by the region’s large tourist trade.
