Location

250 km from Paris via the A4 motorway and less than 2 hours from Luxembourg. Meuse TGV train station, 30 minutes away, provides 58-minute links to the French capital. Bar-le-Duc, 14 km away, known as “a town of art and history”, constitutes one of France’s most outstanding Renaissance towns. It has been famous for centuries for its “Bar caviar”, an exquisite jam which is made with redcurrants that have been deseeded using a goose feather, an art that is unique in the world. An 18-hole golf course is less than 10 km away, shops and schools are 8 km and there is a horse-riding centre nearby.

Description

This isolated property is along a little secondary road. At a distance from the village, it is enclosed by a stone wall on the road side. Discreet entrance gates reveal its presence. Standing in more than four hectares, it is an integral part of an open, 50 hectare forest estate, which dominates the “Château de Jean d'Heurs”. This estate included an “Abbaye de Prémontrés” in the 12th century.
This house is in the midst of a clearing on a hillside. A forest path is an invitation to take a walk through the wooded parklands and visit an astonishing little building, known as “la baraque du diable” (the devil’s abode), which was the General of the Empire’s bachelor pad. Plain and simple, it has but one room, paved with terracotta floor tiles and adorned with a fireplace. The roof, covered with violin-shaped tiles, is in a good state of repair.
High fencing, at the other end, encloses a tennis court.

The designer house

This Parisian architect took advantage of the presence of the chateau’s former dog kennel in the 1960’s. He adjoined it to a 3-storey house forming a vertical, concrete “H”. Smooth white rendering, geometric openings, recently restored with aluminium frames and double glazing, therefore contrast with lime-pointed white stone, a Roman tiled roof and arched openings. The existing wrought iron fencing, enclosing a small, flower-filled priest’s garden, has been preserved.

Ground floor
Its layout on a hillside provides access to the night-time section via a vast hall with a corridor balcony that looks down on a large 78 m² lounge. Fully glazed over a two storey height on the forest side, it reveals a view of a landscape that extends beyond the treetops. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a cloakroom and a dressing room are laid out around this open-plan area. The floors are of polished stone.
A little corridor makes it possible to reach the old building which houses a study and a library area.

Garden level
A spiral stairway provides access to all three levels.
The lounge is obviously the main room in the house. Its vast proportions, housing a recuperated fireplace, are steeped in light. The glazed wall is fitted with remote-controlled blinds to keep the rays of the summer sun at bay and a sliding door provides direct access to the outside. This level also includes a fitted kitchen and a dining room as well as a boiler room with a 2008 oil-fired boiler that is used in cold weather as backup to the heat pump.

First floor
This level houses two bedrooms, one of which has a study area. The floors are carpeted.

Our opinion

A 1960’s architect successfully created an original and contemporary style building, constructing it alongside another old, equally original building. The design is sound, its vast windows looking out over an abundant forest, one of those that incite residents to go walking. This house, in its peaceful setting, forms an unusual retreat, like an observatory for watching the local wild life. It is less than an hour from Paris via an easily reached TGV train station.
