Location

This house, by the side of the river Loire, near to a village with all shops and amenities, is about ten minutes away from Saumur with its train station and some 40 km from the town of Angers with its TGV train station. The A85 motorway is within easy reach.

Description

This house, standing in a village on the side of the river Loire, is set back off of a road, prohibited to lorries, with light traffic. Gates provide access to a courtyard leading to the front door of the house. A first garden runs alongside the facade facing the Loire and a second extends behind the house.

The house

This house is constructed from stone, freestone and brick. It is composed of three buildings, laid out in a U-shape. The first, near to the entrance courtyard, comprises a ground and a first floor, topped with a second floor laid out in the attic space. The second, facing the river Loire, has a ground floor, topped with an attic level. Whilst the third, at the back, spans but a ground floor. All the roofs are covered with slate. The window framing, the quoins, the roof dormers and the cornices are all made of freestone.


Ground floor
The entrance hall provides access to a kitchen, a dining room, a lounge, a toilet and to a stairway that goes upstairs. The entrance hall, kitchen and dining room have terracotta floor tiles. The lounge features a freestone fireplace. The dining room opens via a door on to the front garden whilst the lounge opens on to the back garden. The wooden stairway features a single quarter-turning flight. The lounge is extended by a room, providing access to the boiler room and the rear wing. Said wing is laid out as a bedroom-study, with a shower room as well as a toilet and includes a door leading out into the garden.
First floor
The landing provides access to a first bedroom and a corridor, leading to two other bedrooms as well as a bathroom with a toilet. This first bedroom has its own bathroom, with a toilet, and a dressing room.
Second floor
This landing leads to two bedrooms and to a toilet. One of these bedrooms has its own bathroom. There are terracotta floor tiles throughout.

The garden

The garden is divided into two sections. A small garden in front of the house has rose bushes along the facade, an alleyway, a lawn and a low laurel hedge running alongside the street. Around the back is an area laid to lawn with flower beds near to the house as well as a second grassy area, reached via a few steps and an alleyway, surrounded like a natural cirque by the freestone hillside.

Our opinion

With its neo-Renaissance air, provided by its mullioned windows and ogee arches, this house blends beautifully into the Loire Valley, classified as a World Heritage site by Unesco. The majestic river flows past the main facade. The small freestone cirque which contains the rear garden is a haven of privacy. The demarcation line between the inside and the outside is somewhat blurred by the many French windows. Its originality of style makes this residence, in a good overall state of repair, immediately appealing.
