A large, luxurious home and its guest bedrooms
in a town with a 12th century abbey in Oise
Beauvais, OISE picardy 60000 FR

This large, luxurious home, dating from 1850, stands near to a 12th century abbey in a village, along the Paris-London bicycle route, in the French department of Oise, 90 km from Paris or Dieppe’s beaches, 25 km from Beauvais and its airport.

Tall gates open on to a gravel driveway, bordering the building which stands at right angles to the street, and leading to a carpark that adjoins the caretaker’s cottage, an outbuilding and a gazebo overlooking a large pond.

The large, luxurious home

This character building, fully renovated inside and out, is extended by a terrace, constructed over a cellar, providing easy access and a clear view over the garden.
This stone house is covered with a recent rendering. The roof, covered with small flat tiles, has also been redone.

Ground floor
The large, fully glazed entrance door opens into a vestibule, with cement floor tiles. A through dining room, on the right-hand side, has similar tiles and is extremely bright. A passageway leads to a kitchen, with a wonderful view of the 12th century abbey. At the back are a storeroom and a study which are out of bounds to guests.
Two lounges with cement floor tiles, on the left-hand side of the vestibule, exude a cosy air and follow on one from the other. A marble fireplace, a bookshelf unit and panelling contribute to the warm atmosphere.
An extension of the main house was built in the 2010’s so as to create a studio worthy of the artist who was one of the residents. This square studio goes up to a height of 9 m and its windows avoid all direct sunlight.
The main vestibule also provides access to a stairway, illuminated by stained glass windows. Its steps and handrail are made of oak wood.

First floor
The corridor has oak wood parquet flooring and is illuminated by large windows looking out over the garden. It leads to two guest bedrooms. Fully renovated with sober decoration, they have been officially recognised by the French “Gites-de-France” holiday rental unit association.
The first has an additional room for use as a bedroom if required and a shower room with a toilet.
The second, with solid wood parquet floor like its neighbour, has a view stretching over the parklands and the village abbey. Its private bathroom also has parquet flooring, a marble fireplace and a free-standing bath.
On the same level, a third bedroom for the resident and its shower room.

Second floor
This floor has sloping ceilings. One bedroom is carpeted so as to avoid making any noise. This room is luminous courtesy of its two windows and it has a fully tiled shower room with a toilet. It is followed by a single bedroom and, on the other side, a bedroom, with a shower room and a raised sleeping area.
Caretaker’s accommodation
Outside and following on from the main house is the caretaker’s cottage. This brick-built building has a tile roof. It comprises two main rooms, including a kitchen with an eating area, a bedroom and a shower room.
A brick outbuilding, facing the caretaker’s cottage, stands partially on a packed mud floor. Originally home to animals, it is now used for storing garden tools and equipment.
The garden
The house looks out over a completely enclosed and level garden, one section of which is actually building land (a project is possible). This garden comprises an orchard, a vegetable garden and a large pond, with a jetty. There is also a red brick gazebo which is reflected in the pond, surrounded by perennial plants and various shrubs that flower one after another throughout the year.

Our opinion

In the shade of an age-old church, all kinds of features make this long house extremely attractive. One of which is the gazebo with its reflection in the pond water. Another, the contrast between the ochre-coloured rendering and the red brick. Inside, the rooms appear to vie with one another for the best cement floor tiles, but there is no clear winner. It is easy, however, to predict that a bed & breakfast activity could be run here without any difficulty should that coincide with the new owners' wishes.
