castles / chateaux for sale - finistère - in brittany

A listed, 18th century chateau and its 16 ha garden
10 minutes from the sea in Brittany

In the south of the French department of Finistère, 10 minutes from an airport with 75-minute links to Paris/Orly, approx. 15 minutes from a TGV station with links to Paris that will take just over three hours as of next year. Very near to the Atlantic Ocean, this property is on the outskirts of a market town with all local shops.

This estate has several entrances, one of which, flanked by two large granite pillars, leads to a little road running through the undergrowth to the property.
A gatekeeper’s house, on the left-hand side, indicates that the chateau will soon come into view at the end of a driveway, lined with blue hydrangea bushes.
This impressive building dominates a long view over the garden. The outbuildings and a chapel stand behind it.

The listed chateau

With its vast, stately proportions, this large granite building comprises a central rectangular building flanked by two protruding pavilions. All the buildings have slate roofs featuring five roof dormers.
A very large terrace, enhancing the building, has a majestic view over the main courtyard, surrounded by pillars, providing a clear view down a long alleyway through the parklands.
This listed chateau, dating from the 18th century, was constructed on an old fortress, following the resounding success of one of the large aristocratic families of the region of Cornouaille during the reign of Louis XV.
Spanning approx. 900 m² of living space over two levels, it has a heating system powered by a low consumption, oil-fired boiler.

Ground floor
The main entrance door opens into a large hall, spanning approx. 70 m², which is dominated by an impressive, listed stairway with its two flights of granite steps. It is enhanced by wrought iron railings that bear witness to the quality of the work of the craftsmen at that time.
The floor is paved with granite flagstones. There is a toilet.
On the left-hand side is a lounge, spanning approx. 60 m², with parquet flooring and painted wall panelling. It is followed by a door opening into the entrance hall of the left-hand pavilion where, in addition to a small lounge and a kitchen with a large fireplace, a wooden stairway leads upstairs.
On the right-hand side is a dining room, spanning approx. 60 m², with parquet flooring and walls hung with fabric or covered in panelling. A door opens into the entrance hall of the right-hand pavilion where there is a wooden stairway, a lounge, with a large wooden fireplace, and a fitted kitchen.

First floor
This floor comprises five large bedrooms with bathrooms and toilets as well as two suites with bathrooms and toilets.
Guest house
This guest house, spanning approx. 100 m², has been completely restored and has gas-fired heating.
Ground floor
On the left-hand side of the entrance hall is a lounge; on the right-hand side is a fitted kitchen. It also includes a toilet and a stairway leading upstairs.
First floor
This floor comprises a bedroom and a shower room.
Second floor
This floor includes two bedrooms with sloping ceilings.
The north-facing outbuildings, behind the chateau, are used for accommodation purposes and as stables. They span a floor surface area of approx. 350 m², over two levels. The slate roofs are in a good state of repair.
The chapel was constructed in 1847 and is now in need of restoration works.
It has a new roof.

The garden
The garden, spanning a surface area of approx. 16 ha, is planted with rhododendron, Japanese azalea and blue hydrangea bushes as well as heather, African lily, decoratively trimmed boxwood and immense carpets of daffodils, narcissi as well as other bulb flowers.
It is watered by a computer-controlled, drip irrigation system.

Our opinion

The current owner has continued to restore and revive this property, giving it back all its splendour of yesteryear, since the 1960’s. His mission is now complete as this estate is currently one of the most beautiful in Brittany.
With its unspoilt location just ten minutes from the sea and its multitude of uses, this chateau would lend itself to a great variety of projects.
The listing of this property as a French historic monument has been done in such a way that large tax deductions are possible every year.
