Description

This chateau, constructed in the late 18th century, is the result of transformation works carried out on an old hunting lodge used by Henry IV. It stands between a main courtyard, with a caretaker’s cottage at the entrance, and landscaped parklands, enhanced with two symmetrical ornamental pools and a third “biological” pool used for swimming. The estate is enclosed by walls, broken only by double entrance gates.

The chateau

This old, fully restored hunting lodge spans three levels, including the converted attic floor, but not counting the cellars. The central section, containing the entrance, features an original open pediment motif on either side of the roof. The entrance is reached via a flight of six stone steps. Both wings are topped with balustrades, like those flanking the roof and rear entrance terraces. The roof is covered with slate and the quoins are made of dressed stone.

Ground floor
The entrance hall features a tiled floor with inlaid decoration. It provides access to a vast living room, where four openings (3 French windows and a window) let in copious amounts of light. Its oak wood parquet flooring is laid in a Versailles pattern. This area is shared by a dining room and a lounge which is adorned with a fireplace. A smoking room-library is made cosy by its floor-to-ceiling panelling and its fireplace. It has oak wood parquet flooring. The through, modern kitchen is in pristine condition. It features a central unit as well as a fireplace which encourages residents to linger. Also on the ground floor are a toilet and a bedroom, with its shower room, toilet and dressing room. It has strip pattern oak wood parquet flooring and a brick fireplace.
First floor
A landing with oak wood parquet flooring, laid in a Versailles pattern, provides access to a small storage room, a linen room and, left, to the second bedroom, with oak wood parquet flooring and a cupboard, as well as to a marble bathroom, with two wash-hand basins and a toilet. The third bedroom, opposite, is extremely bright courtesy of its four windows. It has oak wood parquet flooring, laid in a Versailles pattern and is enhanced with a stone fireplace. It has a dressing room, a bathroom, with a stone and mosaic tile floor, two wash-hand basins, a bath, an Italian style shower and a toilet. The fourth bedroom, on the right-hand side, has strip pattern, oak wood parquet flooring, a marble shower room and a toilet.
Second floor
This attic space has been converted into one through room (study or games room), opening on to a 40 m² terrace.

The caretaker’s cottage

This small house, with lower sections made of millstone grit and an upstairs featuring half-timbering under overhanging eaves, has a tile roof. It spans two levels, not counting the raised cellar. The ground floor comprises a living room, with a fireplace, and an American-style kitchen. Upstairs are a bedroom, a bathroom and a toilet.

Our opinion

The ageing beau, an active hunter, would not recognise his hunting lodge since it was revamped with late 18th century classicism. Its proportions are balanced. The horizontal lines abound in balustrades which flank several terraces with pleasant views over the ornamental pools and the flowerbeds in the parklands. The polished interior leaves but relaxation for the new owners. This property comprises a new elegant address, just a stone’s throw from Fontainebleau and very near to Paris.
