A 17th century, village castle in walled parklands
between Nîmes, Uzès and the Cevennes mountains
Alès, GARD languedoc-roussillon 30100 FR

40 km from Nîmes (170-minute TGV train links to Paris), 70 km from Montpellier (international airport), at the foot of the Cevennes mountains, near to Uzès, Anduze and the Ardèche gorges, near to the beaches and the Camargue region, in the middle of a market town with all shops and amenities. In the peace and quiet, in 2 hectares of walled parklands on the periphery of an urban area.

The buildings, the castle and its outbuildings, stand together on a quarter of the property, leaving the majority as parklands, planted with Mediterranean evergreen species. Once through the old entrance gates, an alleyway winds its way to the main facade.
The actual building, although much older, was completely redesigned in the 17th century. This is shown by its classical interior layout, typical of the era. In the 18th century, the openings were enlarged and the interior decoration modernised. The main, south-east-facing facade is flanked by two round towers. In the middle of the other side, a single square tower houses the stairway.
The castle communicates with the outbuildings, an orangery, stables, storage areas and an old chapel, via two old water reservoirs on the ground floor that are no longer in use.
Large areas still await renovation (the second floor of the castle and the upstairs of the outbuildings).

The castle

Spread out over three levels, the rooms are laid out on either side of a gallery leading from the main entrance to the stairway. These include four main vaulted rooms, a kitchen, two lounges and an old kitchen which could be renovated, further annex rooms, hall areas and a room in each tower.
The halfpace, vaulted stairway, comprising two flights of steps with an intermediate landing providing a full left-hand turn, leads up to the first and second floors.
The first floor includes six bedrooms, two bathrooms and a small self-contained flat opening on to a terrace which spans almost 200 m². This unit is directly above the water storage tanks and the orangery, which can also be reached from the courtyard on the ground floor.
The top floor, under its recent roof, awaits full restoration works as it has not been lived in for a very long time. A terrace on top of the stairway tower dominates the landscape.

The outbuildings

The outbuildings flank a grassy courtyard. Apart from the old chapel, everything on the ground floor is vaulted. The water storage tanks, the orangery, the stables, the storage areas and the deconsecrated chapel all follow on from one another. The upper section of the water storage tanks and the orangery form a terrace on a level with the first floor. The stables, the storage areas and the chapel all have a second level which was once divided and which comprises some spacious areas.

Our opinion

This castle, near to an attractive town, can be lived in straightaway but its modern-day home comforts could be improved. It would also be easy to envisage the conversion of all areas not included in recent works. It is worthy of note that it would be possible to have planning permission to extend the floor surface area linked to the living space by 30%.
