Montpellier, HERAULT languedoc-roussillon 34000 FR

On the outskirts of the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park, the Cevennes National Park and near to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park.
This castle stands in the middle of one of Europe’s biggest green open spaces, near to the Navacelles Circus, along the Knights Templar and Hospitaller circuit with its numerous protected and listed sites. The geographical location of this residence, set 4 km from a market town with all shops, makes it possible to quickly reach the shores of the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Tarn Gorges.
At an altitude of 750 metres, the climate is still Mediterranean.

Description

This residence, built between courtyard and garden on the outskirts of a little, attractively enhanced village, is set in magnificent, unspoilt natural surroundings.

The castle

Despite its impressive appearance, with its two towers and its thick walls, this castle is, in fact, quite modest in size, spanning 130 m² of living space over four floors.
Up until 1562, this edifice belonged directly to the bishops in Lodève and was used as one of their residences. Its appearance still reflects that of the Middle-Ages, even if the warlike presence of its brattice and numerous loopholes is tempered by the numerous openings added in the 16th and 17th centuries. Preceded by a courtyard closed by tall iron gates, the tall building is extended on the left-hand side by the old stables and sheds, spanning a total floor surface area of approx. 120 m² and awaiting conversion. The boiler room and the cellars on the right-hand side are reached via the parklands.
The decor features bare and rendered stone walls, vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, terracotta and stone floor tiles as well as parquet flooring.

Ground floor
This vaulted level houses the vestibule, a study and a reception area. The remainder is taken up by utility rooms including storage areas, a laundry room, refrigerators, etc.
First floor
Reached via the half-pace stone stairway, this level comprises a large, 38 m² dining room, with a fireplace, a kitchen, a back kitchen in the round tower, a bedroom with a bathroom and, on the right-hand side, a suite with an anteroom, a bedroom and a shower room in the pavilion set at right angles.
In the dining room and the kitchen, two openings provide access on to the 70 m² terrace laid out above the old stables and looking down on to the courtyard and parklands. This area is extended by a sun terrace.

Second floor
At the time when this edifice was an episcopal residence, this level was the “noble” floor. It is currently laid out as a 39 m² lounge, with a superb fireplace, two bedrooms, with their shower rooms in the towers, and a suite comprising an anteroom, a bedroom and a shower room in the pavilion set at right angles.
Third floor
The layout of the rooms on this level is similar to that of the other floors, with a billiards’ room, two bedrooms, each with a shower room and a suite with an anteroom, a bedroom and a shower room in the right-hand wing.

The parklands

Although surrounded by walls preserving the privacy of their residents, the parklands, planted with tall and old trees, blend in with their natural surroundings which here comprise a natural garden featuring grasslands, beds with boxwood bushes and rocks.

Our opinion

The Larzac limestone plateau, despite being synonymous with unspoilt surroundings and rugged rurality, remains a little known site. Set in the heart of the Knights Templars’ lands, this residence has stood for centuries in this unequalled landscape that it looks down on as if from an eagle’s nest. This property is but an hour from Montpellier international airport and is easily reached via the A75 motorway. Of a reasonable size, it was fully restored in 2007 and its home comforts are in line with modern-day standards. Newcomers will, therefore, be able to use it as a main residence, like the current owners, or make it a house in the country where holidaymakers come to recharge their batteries without cutting themselves off from the rest of the world.
