Listed ruins of a feudal castle in the French department of Ain

, AIN rhones-alps FR
Rhône-Alpes

Location

Perched on a knoll, the castle looks down on the banks of the Ain on the road to Oussiat. The course of the river, which gushes down the Jura Mountains, is not as steep as it flows on to the plains that are crossed east to west by a segment of the A40 motorway, providing fast access to the city of Lyon.
The nearest village is at the foot of the castle, another is just a few miles away, and Bourg-en-Bresse with its TGV train station is approx. 25 km away.

Description

Concealed in the folds of a dense forest, this basically quadrilateral building still stands proudly despite its dilapidated state and having long been abandoned. Spanning approx. 1,000 m² and surrounded by dry moats, the appearance of strength and power exuded by its walls is accentuated by the clearing of the undergrowth and trees carried out by enthusiasts of the site.

The exact construction date of the castle is unknown, but its history is easy to trace back as far as 1330 and it appears that its structure has not changed since this time.

Three floors connected by stairways were installed in one of the towers when it underwent renovation works. The courtyard has been cleared, certain walls reinforced, the moats cleaned and a small medieval garden has been recreated.
However, the building is in ruins and cannot be lived in, even though it can be said to be robust.

Our opinion

The natural romanticism that characterises any medieval ruin is tinged here with a strange and brutal mineral majesty. Its walls provide an unobstructed view, and it is easy to imagine the respect imposed long ago by this keep, anchored on the eastern steps of the kingdom. In addition to its rarity as witness to a bygone era, the property is classified on the French Supplementary Historic Monument List which means that it is entitled to numerous highly interesting and sought-after tax and heritage benefits. A recent, in-depth survey provides a solid basis for the almost complete restoration of the property.
