Description

This chateau, constructed in the 16th century under the reign of Henry IV, remained the property of noble families prior to becoming a convent for Polish nuns which, together with a neighbouring farm, had a great reputation in the farming world.
This leisure chateau looks widely out over the surroundings on both the courtyard and the garden sides. New, 16th century architecture gives it balance and symmetry whilst preserving the traditional features of this type of construction.

The chateau

This property stretches over approx. 1.7 ha of completely enclosed parklands. Heavy wrought iron gates open on to a red gravel driveway which leads to the chateau. A helicopter pad can be seen in front of the entrance. This chateau spans two levels, topped with roofs covered with glazed tiles. Two symmetrical buildings, flanked by square towers at their ends, are connected by a central, higher projection, topped with a pavilion roof. The layout is the same on both facades.
An outbuilding is set at right angles to the rear of the chateau.

Ground floor
The central, through vestibule is richly decorated with wall panelling as well as old cement floor tiles and is heated via an old stone fireplace. It provides access to a lounge-library with old, red terracotta floor tiles. The French ceiling has been painted white and matches an old stone fireplace. The lounge leads to an adjoining hall housing a stone stairway going upstairs and to a suite. Said suite is bright and spacious. The floor is covered with old red terracotta tiles blending with the mahogany hues of the wall panelling. The fireplace is fitted with a wood-burning stove and the ceiling features exposed beams. The bathroom is just made for relaxation and well-being with its spa shower and its sauna.
On the other side of the vestibule, a wide stone stairway runs along one side and a corridor provides access to a toilet, a small study and a dining room, open on to a kitchen. The room is vast and well illuminated via numerous windows. The floor is covered with terracotta tiles. An old stone fireplace adorns one of the walls and matches a second fireplace in the kitchen, fitted with an Aga cooking range.

First floor
A first stone stairway, at the end of the building, provides access to the first floor and two suites. In the first, the French ceiling matches the parquet flooring. Wall panelling makes this room warm and welcoming, a feeling that is enhanced by the presence of an old fireplace, fitted with a wood-burning stove. Numerous windows on either side let in copious amounts of light. The view looks down on the parklands. The bathroom features a free-standing bath tub and a shower. A separate toilet completes the suite.
The second suite also has wall panelling, a French ceiling and parquet flooring. An old fireplace decorates one of the walls. The bathroom features an old cast iron bath standing on a floor covered with old terracotta tiles.
The second stairway adjoining the entrance vestibule goes up to two suites laid out in the chateau’s central projection. Both suites have a bathroom with a toilet and a spa bath.
Another, more spacious suite is reached via the main stairway. A long corridor leads to a study-library, enhanced with a fireplace. A large relaxation room, fitted with a spa bath and a sauna, is also heated by a fireplace. The bedroom, richly decorated with wall panelling, also has an old fireplace. A bathroom completes this particularly elegant and comfortable suite.

Attic
The first stone stairway continues up to the floor housing the attic space. The roofs are in an excellent state of repair and this level could easily be converted into additional suites.

The lodge and the outbuildings

Next to the chateau’s kitchen are a back kitchen, a laundry room, a shower room and a separate toilet. A lodge, adjoining and communicating with the chateau, houses a lounge-dining room as well as bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
The other outbuildings are joined on to the chateau and house a boiler room as well as a woodshed. Other outbuildings are currently used as a workshop, a storage area and a carport.

Our opinion

The balance, harmony and elegance of this chateau are immediately obvious. It stands quietly at a distance from the town whilst taking advantage of all of its assets. It has been meticulously renovated and maintained in accordance with its original architecture and decorative features. Only the best of modern-day home comforts complement its fully intact authenticity and charm. Whether a work tool or a place to live, this property will lend itself equally well to both functions. With additional areas awaiting conversion, the history of this centuries old chateau can but continue.
