A 17th century chateau and its outbuildings awaiting
full restoration works on a 5 ha estate 150 km from Paris


Paris is 150 km away via the excellent A13 motorway (slip road about 2 km away). Deauville and its coast are 60 km away and Rouen, the regional capital, is 30 km away. The nearest village, with all shops and services, is but 2 km away. The nearest SNCF train station is 20 km away.


Five hectares of land surround this chateau, built in the 17th century and redesigned over the centuries. This building awaits full restoration works as do its outbuildings. One of which has however been partially redone: walls lined with plasterboard, water and electricity supply points installed. Once through the tall gates, this outbuilding is to be found on the left-hand side. The other, on the right-hand side, awaits full renovation works, together with the dovecote, topped a candlesnuffer roof and partially collapsed.
This chateau stands some 50 m away from the outbuildings. A vast terrace paved with wide flagstones stretches out in front of one of the facades. The harmonious parklands still have their superb trees.

The chateau

A few steps lead up to the building, the central section of which was built in 1630 on foundations dating back to the One Hundred Years War. Its superb vaulted brick cellar is still in its original condition. The oldest building is flanked by two added pavilions, covered with grey cement and topped with hip roofs, in the inner corners of which nestle two turrets, with candlesnuffer roofs, on each side. The first floor of the rear facade features half-timbering supported on low brick and white stone walls, all dominated by a central, triangular pediment.
The other facade is entirely covered with cement.
The top floor is dotted with arched and Jacobin-style roof dormers. The slate roofs feature tall chimney stacks.

Ground floor
Small-paned windows let in copious amounts of light.
The through vestibule, with double French windows, provides access to the kitchen, a room that is not in use and two large lounges. One of the latter still has its floor-to-ceiling panelling, whilst the other has wainscoting covering but the bottom half of its walls. Both have large fireplaces. The floors are covered with oak wood parquet flooring, some of which probably date from the 19th century.
Some of the floors in the other rooms are covered with old terracotta tiles or tiling with inlaid decoration.
An original, left-hand turning stairway, with terracotta tile steps and wrought iron railings, leads to the upper floors.
All the rooms are laid out one after another and are accessed via double wooden doors.

First floor
This level, also in need of full restoration works, comprises five bedrooms, with panelled walls, all still in their original condition. Almost all of them have a fireplace and floors covered with terracotta tiles or oak wood parquet flooring. One of the towers houses a toilet.
Second floor
This level comprises four bedrooms and a toilet. A temporary shower has been installed by the owners so that they can stay there.
Third floor
This top floor includes five domestic staff bedrooms, each spanning a floor surface area of approx. 7 m², and an attic.
The vaulted cellars can be reached via a spiral stone stairway, leaving from the vestibule near to the other stairway going upstairs.

The 19th century outbuilding, partially converted into accommodation

This superb building, with red brick facades, spans two levels. Large, arched, double doors act as an entrance. It is divided into three sections, topped with a 10 year old, slate, gable roof. The ground and first floors have wide, arched openings. The floors are tiled. Plumbing and electric wiring have been installed.

Ground floor
Two equally large rooms adjoin each side of an entrance hall, housing the wooden stairway that leads up to the second level. The walls in some of the rooms have been lined with plasterboard.
First floor
This level comprises three small rooms and two other larger rooms, set at each end.

This building awaits full restoration works.

This building also awaits full restoration works.

The bread oven

This, too, is in need of full restoration works.

Our opinion

This chateau, with its turrets partially built into the carcass in the corner formed with the side pavilions, is particularly intriguing. The majestic front facade, with its small semi-circular arched doorway featuring twin Doric order columns, appears to radically turn its back on the rear facade, vividly featuring half-timbering with brick masonry filler and white stone quoins. Prior to starting a vast restoration project which will need enthusiasm, means and energy, it will be necessary to carry out a careful examination of the outside of this fascinating building as well as the rich remains of its interior decoration. The residence and its estate are so captivating and promising that the investment appears quite reasonable. The outbuilding, already restored, could rapidly be converted into a dwelling for use as a base camp.
