Location

The protected natural surroundings, to the south of a region featuring irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches in undulating countryside, where production of local wines is flourishing, are crossed by numerous streams. La-Roche-sur-Yon, Les-Herbiers and La-Châtaigneraie are easily reached via the main roads. The nearby Chantonnay TER train station provides links to Tours, Saumur and even the beaches of Les-Sables-d'Olonne. The Puy-du-Fou historical theme park is but a 25-minute drive away.

Description

In the midst of a little historic town, the commerce of which was renowned as far as Spain in the 15th century, where inhabitants can take advantage of all the infrastructures and shops of the neighbouring Chantonnay. The Viscount of Thouars had a castle built here in the 12th century, but only the tower currently remains. Enclosed by a stone wall, the chateau is surrounded by outbuildings with an orangery, guest pavilions and the old stables. This property has two main entrances. One opens on to one of the oldest streets in the town. The other leads from the main courtyard to the entrance porch way.

The chateau

This property is composed of several character buildings. The chateau, built in 1856, is impressive with approx. 650 m² of living space, a 200 m² basement and ten bedrooms; unusual features that do not include the 100 m² of attic space that await conversion. The main building, slightly set back, is flanked by two symmetrical buildings, constructed outside the fabric of the carcass. Four turrets, with corbelling, elegantly enhance each corner of the masonry with their candlesnuffer roofs and their finials. The carcass is constructed from granite, dressed stone and quarry stone blocks. The traditional roofing framework is covered with natural slate. It was redone in 1990. The chateau’s architecture, spanning five levels, is elaborate. Although a few renovation works need to be scheduled, the main carcass is in a good state of repair.


Ground floor
This chateau is entered via a granite porch way and a vast main hall, with two impressive columns, where family, friends and guests can be welcomed. Its 4 m high ceiling makes residents feel small. The floor is composed of Burgundy stone and slate. It precedes a long corridor that crosses the entire building. Floor-to-ceiling panelling conceals several storage areas. Said corridor provides access, right, to the utility areas comprising a large, semi-professional kitchen, notably fitted with an old “potager” (a secondary hearth where soups and other previously prepared dishes were cooked on embers), a bread oven and a fireplace. All these are original features. Adjoining this room is a storeroom, on one side, and a laundry room, on the other, with a door leading to the basement. A corridor, facing the kitchen, provides access to a landing with two separate toilets, an office and a meal preparation room which communicates with the large, main lounge. This room is outstanding not only because of its carved, oak wood panelling, but also because of its fireplace and wide trumeau. Three tall windows, drawing the eye towards the outside, provide a magnificent view of the parklands. Once the meal is finished, residents can continue their discussion in the smoking room or in the second lounge. All the ground floor rooms still have their original parquet flooring. These large rooms, with 4 m high ceilings and numerous fireplaces, exude a warm atmosphere. The first and second floors are reached via the exceptional main stairway. The third can be reached via a back stairway.
First floor
The vast, solid wood landing provides access to a first bedroom, with storage areas and a toilet, with a wash-hand basin. A corridor, with tall wooden cupboards, goes from the landing to two adjoining bedrooms, with fireplaces and washing areas. These are followed by a third bedroom, with its own bathroom, as well as the main bathroom.
Second floor
This floor is laid out in a similar manner to the level below, with one significant difference, the presence of an extra shower room half-way up the stairway. Otherwise, it comprises four bedrooms, one of which has its own bathroom with a shower cubicle, as well as a family bathroom. Every bedroom has a fireplace and a view of the parklands.
Third floor
This level is reached from the floor below via the back stairway. It is laid out as a flat with a fitted kitchen on the landing. It provides access to two bedrooms. The magnificent view from the windows takes in the tiled rooftops of the town. A corridor leads to a bathroom, with a toilet, as well as to a vast attic awaiting conversion.
Basement
The basement comprises several cellars and storage areas, a boiler room and a wine cellar.

The parklands

This chateau stands in the midst of wooded parklands, spanning more than 2 ha. The driveway leads to the main courtyard as well as to miscellaneous outbuildings. A stone perimeter wall protects the property from onlookers. An orangery stands on the right-hand side of the parklands. Constructed from stone and brick, this architecturally interesting building spans approx. 100 m². It awaits renovation and the upstairs could be converted into bedrooms. The old stable building is also outstanding. Spanning more than 200 m², it would lend itself to a variety of rehabilitation projects such as holiday accommodation units, a bed & breakfast activity or even a function room. On the left-hand side of the parklands, concealed behind another stone wall, are two guest pavilions. The first, spanning approx. 70 m², comprises a living room on the ground floor, with a bedroom and a bathroom upstairs. The other forms a studio flat, with a kitchen and a shower room, spanning a total of approx. 35 m². Both these outbuildings have a view of the swimming pool and the Jacuzzi. The old kennel, out of sight in the midst of a variety of trees, is in a state of ruin.

Our opinion

This chateau is quite outstanding for such a little commune. Impressive and elegant courtesy of its size and its architecture, the story of its history is but waiting to be continued. The warmth of the premises provided by the extensive panelling, the tall oak wood cupboards, the double lounge doors and even the numerous fireplaces forms a contrast with the outsides where verdure, stone and brick take pride of place. But whether it is inside or outside, the chance to live in this property is a golden opportunity.
