A house set between a large fortified farm and a listed neo-Gothic chateau
in the midst of a village in the French Vexin region


This unique building stands at the end of a narrow street in the heart of a village in the French Vexin region. It is set between a large, 17th century fortified farm and a listed, late 19th, early 20th century neo-Gothic chateau. The narrow street, “Ruelle de la Fosse aux Chevaux”, was named after an old pond where draught animals were brought to soothe their aching limbs in the water after working in the fields. The natural surroundings are unspoilt and woods are numerous. A farming region, it also has a long history to which its archeologic heritage bears witness.
The village has an infant and a junior school. A school bus takes pupils to the secondary school and the sixth form college. Gisors railway station, with trains to Paris-Saint-Lazare, is 5 minutes away. The small town has numerous shops. The RER train line A is 30 minutes away in Cergy.
The local countryside is ideal for hiking. Nearby are 2 golf courses (Rebetz and Bertichères in Chaumont-en-Vexin), horse riding centres and stabling for horses (in Lattainville and Reilly).


This long, traditional farmhouse, divided into three sections, and its outbuilding set at right angles are part of an old farm, the construction of which took place from the 17th century through to the middle of the 19th century. Neglected for many years, renovation works breathed new life into it as of the 2000’s. The walls are built from rendered quarry stone blocks which is typical of this area. Brick facing has been added to one section of the first floor.

The house

Once through the paved porch way off the street, the house is on the right-hand side with the garden in front, bordered on the left-hand side by an outbuilding.

Ground floor
The front door opens into a 40 m² living room, with a fireplace, exposed ceiling beams, wooden flooring and 5 windows. Adjoining is the 36 m² kitchen-dining room. The floor is laid with old cement tiles whilst the ceiling features exposed beams. Daylight streams in through a window and a glazed door. And lastly, a laundry-boiler room houses the boiler, the oil tank, the domestic hot water tank and a sink. There is also a toilet on the ground floor.
First floor
This level is reached via two stairways going up from the dining room.
The stairs on the right-hand side lead to a 45 m² bedroom. It has a cathedral ceiling, with a 4 m high ridge, and is illuminated via 6 windows as well as 3 skylights.
The left-hand stairway leads to a 29 m² bedroom (or workshop) also with a cathedral ceiling and a 4 m high ridge. Daylight comes in via 2 windows and a polycarbonate atrium. It has wooden flooring.
Between these two rooms is a small 10 m² bedroom, with a cathedral ceiling (4 m high ridge), a mezzanine, 1 window and 2 skylights.
And lastly, the bathroom is fitted with a bath, a wash-hand basin and a toilet. Daylight comes in through a window.

The outbuildings comprise the paved porch way and a sort of covered area where stone steps go down to two superb vaulted cellars. The garden is wooded.

Our opinion

The French Vexin region, the name alone is enough to conjure up daydreams. It exudes history, the conquest of the royal estate and great writers. Its virtues were expounded in the writings of Elisée-Reclus and Vidal-de-Lablache. The house encloses a natural area where trees vie with flowers. The rendered stone walls and the ceilings with their exposed beams or roofing framework are both rustic and stately. The residence is perfectly habitable as it is. The outbuilding has so much charm that it would be a shame for it not to be converted.
