At the edge of the village but turned towards the countryside and the surrounding wooded hills, the Mas de Saribou is a harmonious fit for the lands of Bas-Vivarais. With the old buidings for a base, the contemporary structure of the gîte - topped with a green roof and bordered by raised terraces - seems to blend into the landscape. Inside, the noble materials - old wood, terracotta tiles and stone slabs - act as an extension of the surrounding nature as they interact with the modern structures. The bright colours of the interior give the ensemble a cheerful, almost playful character. Nature is celebrated and carefully taken care of here, it will no doubt set a brisk tempo for the stays of passing guests.
It is a family house that I inherited in 1982. I have always kept very strong ties in Ardèche. From a very young age, I spent my holidays in this region. As keen hikers and botanists, my parents also passed down their taste for nature. The house is located in southern Ardèche, in the small village of Vesseaux and at the heart of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park. We wanted to restore this old building full of history to its former splendour.
Le Mas de Saribou is a country house built in 1565 with a contemporary extension to accommodate the gîte. During the renovation works, we respected the original structure and kept as many original elements as possible. Of note are all the old wooden doors, the terracotta floors and the limestone slabs which are typical of the region. One of the most important renovations was that of the heating system which is now 100% ecological and rigorously powered by old trees from our orchard. We also created a "green" roof insulated with bales of straw from our crops. The farmhouse has been awarded the Ecogîte® label which means it meets a long list of environmental critera and has a low impact on nature, from its construction to its deconstruction.
Our family has lived here since the 16th century.
The gîte is an ecological house where we have married old and recycled elements with a more contemporary atmosphere. Softness, simplicity and serenity characterise the place. We remain faithful to a very particular way of life and want nothing more than to share our ecological and refined world. For those staying for a week, we offer a dinner aperitif made with organic, local products which is acommpanied by organic and natural wines. My husband is an organic farmer, he grows apple trees, kiwis, chestnut trees and sweet potatoes. Our vegetable garden is open to guests. A tour of the kiwi and apple orchards or a short hike can be organised on request. If our guests so wish, we can also organise or book cultural visits and activities such as canoeing or canyoning. I myself am a tour guide and I love advising my guests on how best to explore Ardèche. The beautiful gardens with a natural swimming pool (the soft, pure water, is filtered by aquatic plants, waterfalls and a sand filter) never fail to keep children happy along with the enchanting frogs, dragonflies and birds.
The small classified villages of Labaume, Saint-Laurent-sous-Coiron, Thines, the castle of Boulogne. The Saturday morning market in Aubenas and the local peasant store "La Musette" in Aubenas. The winemakers Sébastien Arsac in Saint-Jean-le-Centenier and Jérome Poudevigne in Balazuc. The icecream makers Béatrix in Vals and La Fabrique Givrée in Aubenas. The Brioude, a restaurant in Neyrac.

On the ground floor of the gîte is a large living area with a kitchen, a living room and fireplace, a storeroom, a cellar and toilets. Upstairs are four bedrooms, toilets, two large bathrooms and a terrace. Outside there is a beautiful shaded summer kitchen equipped with a four-burner plancha, a stone sink and a fridge to complete the ensemble.
