Description

The town of Ville-d'Avray was often used by experimenting architects in the 20th century. In 1932, a former colleague of Robert-Mallet-Stevens, André-Lurçat, built the Villa-Hefferlin there; a villa that bears outstanding witness to Modern Movement architecture.
A large plot of land made it easy to design a spacious property, laid out in three sections with a front garden, a house and a large, back garden. With its white facades, included on the French Historic Monument List in 1974, and its wide bays, this house makes the most of the transparency between the entrance side and that of the large, back garden.
This property is accessed via the front garden which leads to the main entrance of the house, spanning more than 300 m². The ground floor comprises reception rooms such as a very large lounge, a dining room and a semi-open-plan kitchen, with an eating area, extended by a laundry room and a large garage.
The upstairs, reached via the stairway or an indoor lift, comprises 4 bedrooms, a dressing room and 2 bathrooms.
The house is enhanced on the outside by terraces, balcony corridors and stairways that make it easy to move between the various areas. A superb roof terrace, spanning more than 100 m², enables residents to appreciate the tranquillity as well as the view of the natural surroundings.
A small, 20 m² studio flat, with a kitchen area and a shower room, is an integral part of the villa.
A large basement houses 2 cellars, a boiler room and a wine cellar.

Villa-Hefferlin

This villa comprises two sections, the main house and the self-contained studio flat.

Ground floor
The ground floor is given over to reception areas: the entrance hall opens directly into a large lounge, extended by a dining room. Wide picture windows that open on to both gardens clearly illustrate the transparency sought-after by André-Lurçat. Both the fireplace and the parquet flooring have been fully restored using top quality materials.
The kitchen, where it also possible to eat meals, is semi-open-plan with the reception rooms. Communication with the adjoining rooms (garage, laundry room) and the large, back garden was well thought out.
A toilet with a wash-hand basin, reserved for guests, is discreetly installed near to the stairway and the lift.

First floor
This level, reached via the stairway or the lift, comprises bedrooms and bathrooms. 3 bedrooms, overlooking the garden, are extended outside by a wide balcony corridor, like that on a cruise liner, with access to and views of the large, back garden. Off on its own is a large guest bedroom, with an adjoining terrace. Two vast, fully renovated bathrooms and a dressing room complete this floor.
Second floor
This level is the famous roof terrace. It can be reached either via the interior stairway or via the balcony corridor and the outside stairway. Resembling the top deck of a ship, it dominates the natural surroundings.
Basement
The large basement is divided into three sections: a brand new boiler room, a wine cellar and two large storage areas, one of which is under the garage and fitted with a hoist system.

The studio flat

The studio flat is reached via the front garden. This flat, comprising a large room, a tiny kitchen and a shower room, would be ideal for a caretaker or for a young au-pair.

The garden

The large, back garden, enclosed by walls, extends over more than 1,300 m². Planted with numerous varieties of trees, it would no doubt benefit from some gardening works to restore its initial harmony.

Our opinion

André-Lurçat, brother of Jean-Lurçat creator of wallcoverings, was a well-known 20th century architect. The influence of Robert-Mallet-Stevens can be seen in this villa through its refined design, well thought out to ensure a maximum of light, and the hint of the cruise liner style. With the use of picture windows, the gardens are like additional rooms in the house. Its roof terrace forges the connection with nature which is one of the architectural codes for this style of construction. And then functionalism meant that attention was paid to the smallest of detail. Living here is as satisfying for the body as it is for the soul, especially as the villa has been meticulously renovated.
