260 km from Paris via the A5 motorway, an hour from Troyes and Dijon.
Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises and La-Boisserie, once the residence of General-de-Gaulle, are 25 km away. This region, covered with forests, combines the charm of rural tourism with the traces of a past enhanced by the influences of Champagne, Lorraine and Burgundy.


This mansion house is built on the site of the old ramparts of an 11th century castle, only the keep of which remains.
A little, one-way street leads to this property, standing in the middle of the historic centre of the town. Its elegant, remote controlled gates as well as a pedestrian gate open into an inner paved courtyard. The garden, extending behind and on a lower level, can be directly accessed via a little wooden door.

The mansion house

This L-shaped building, with its rendered stone facades, spans three levels over cellars and under a flat tile roof, featuring roof dormers, guttering and plain stone gargoyles.

Ground floor
The solid wood entrance door is topped by a window adorned with attractive stained glass featuring lettering. The spacious vestibule, with its dressed stone and quarry block walls, is paved with large Burgundy flagstones. Illuminated via tall windows featuring stained glass and indoor shutters, it is divided into two by wrought double doors. Each end has a stairway, one stone and the other wood, going up to the floor above.
The 23 m² kitchen, in the wing set at right angles, overlooks the courtyard and despite its more recent floor tiles, still has its superb stone fireplace that houses the gas cooker as well as its cupboards and small recesses. This room communicates with another small one, set out under the stairway and in use as storage space, as well as with the garage.
This level comprises four rooms, spanning between 24 and 37 m². Each room has interesting architectural features: polished, wide strip or more classically patterned wooden floors, marble and stone fireplaces topped with their mirrors and trumeaux, corner cupboards and bookshelves. One in particular stands out courtesy of its wood panelling concealing cupboards and its astonishing Lorraine-style ceramic wood-burning stove, decorated with the Lorraine Cross. Housed in an alcove, it is still in good working order.
All these rooms have tall windows with indoor wooden shutters and ceilings more than 3.2 m high.

First floor
The two stairways provide access to each end of a long landing. Four bedrooms, spanning between 16 and 36 m², with wooden flooring and stone or marble fireplaces share a bathroom.
A fifth bedroom, spanning 30 m², is located above the kitchen in the wing set at right angles. It adjoins a shower room and a dressing room spanning approx. 10 m². It has a superb stone fireplace and wide strip wooden flooring.

Second floor
Spanning a floor surface area of approx. 175 m², this level comprises several rooms which were probably used for staff accommodation. It is currently in use as an attic.
The cellars are reached from the courtyard. Set out over several levels as they are built on the ramparts, they form an impressive underground maze which made it possible for residents to discreetly escape when the need arose. Some are vaulted. Their temperature and hygrometry are ideal for preserving the delicious nectar harvested locally. A powerful, mains gas-fired boiler was recently installed.
It is possible to go into the garden via one of the reception rooms using a curious spiral stone stairway housed in a turret.
The wooded garden, spanning some 500 m², is enclosed by walls and fencing. It extends the rear facade of the building with its rusticated masonry intended to make cannon balls rebound.

Our opinion

The impenetrable silence that reigns here comes from a distant past. With the thick forest, it forms the basis of this old French province “depleted of vegetation, but ready, indefinitely, to produce what it takes for the living to follow”, to quote the words of General-de-Gaulle who had set up his own, ultimate residence, in the shade of the Lorraine Cross, not far from here. The mansion house, which still has its large rooms and numerous original features, is steeped in this memorial atmosphere. Its location in the heart of the historic district will, however, make it possible for its new owners to take advantage of all amenities, shops and events that are to be found in a modern-day town without even having to get the car out.
