An authentic 18th & 19th century presbytery in a small village
with its listed church in the Anjou region

Angers, MAINE-ET-LOIRE pays-de-loire 49000 FR
Pays de la Loire

In wooded, undulating countryside, in a sleepy little village in the Anjou region, near to a 12th century, listed church, decorated with outstanding frescoes and topped with an astonishing twisted spire. 5 minutes from a character town with all shops and amenities as well as an 18-hole golf course. 20 minutes from La-Flèche, some forty kilometres from the towns of Angers and Saumur. Near to the A11 and A85 motorways.

This presbytery, in a street very near to the church, is accessed via gates flanked by two freestone pillars and two lime trees over one hundred years old. These gates open on to a gravel driveway, leading to the house’s porch way, as well as on to the courtyard with an outbuilding on one side and the garden as well as the terrace on the other. The garden consists of a paved terrace extended by a large lawn, flanked by trees, shrubs, rustic hedges and flowers. Walls enclose the entire property.

The presbytery

This presbytery is built of rendered stone and quarry blocks. The cornices, the framing surrounding the openings and the quoins are made of freestone. It comprises a ground floor and two upper floors, the top one of which is under the slate covered rafters. Four stone steps lead up to a porch way and the entrance door. The central section of the presbytery is topped with a freestone pediment adorned with a cross.

Ground floor
The central entrance hall provides access, on one side, to a lounge with a freestone fireplace and, on the other, to a dining room followed by the adjoining kitchen, back kitchen and toilet. The kitchen has a wood-burning stove set in a fireplace. A first wooden, turning stairway goes up from the entrance hall to all floors. Another stone stairway located under the first one goes down to a superb, vaulted freestone cellar. A wooden door at the end of the hallway opens into the rear courtyard where the boiler room is to be found. The walls of the stairwell are built of freestone. There are terracotta tile floors and French ceilings throughout this floor.
First floor
A wide landing opens, on one side, into a hall area that leads to two bedrooms and a shower room with a toilet. On the other side, another hall area provides access to two more bedrooms, one of which has its own bathroom and toilet. There is strip pattern parquet flooring and French ceilings throughout this floor.
Second floor
A hall area under the rafters provides access to a bedroom with a bathroom and toilet as well as to an attic. The beams of the roofing framework are exposed.

The outbuilding

The outbuilding stands at the end of the courtyard and comprises a covered courtyard that could be used as a garage and provides access to a storage area as well as to a room with a tiled floor, illuminated via a window. A stairway leads up from this room to a bedroom under the rafters with a shower room and toilet. There is parquet flooring on this level, together with exposed beams.

Our opinion

The view of the church rising up out of the wheat fields, with the tall forests in the background, suddenly plunges visitors into the magnificent atmosphere of the surrounding countryside. They become aware of this aura as soon as they go through the gates and pass under the one hundred year old lime trees, flanked by boxwood hedges as well as into the house with its preserved original features. The sight of this superb setting can be appreciated from most of the rooms. New owners can move in straightaway as this immaculately kept presbytery has been fully restored.
