Location

In the Rhone Valley, in the midst of Pilat Regional Nature Park, half-way between Lyon and Valence. Amongst orchards and the vine-covered hillsides of the Côtes-Rôties and the Côtes-du-Condrieu, the undulating countryside of the area known as “Piémont rhodanien” provides a wide diversity of landscapes. The Alps mountain range constitutes the backdrop.
The A7 motorway is 15 minutes away; Lyon is 50 minutes away, together with the TGV train station, with its 2-hour links to Paris, and Saint-Exupéry International Airport.

Description

This old fortified farmstead, built a short distance from the village on a little less than 5,000 m² of land, was once occupied by Carthusian monks. It resembles a stronghold house. The robust, 13th century building is set out around an inner courtyard and its garden. It was long lived in by members of a religious order and even after their departure it still maintained its role of a food-producing farm. Now converted into a classical home, it stands in the heart of an agricultural region, with no near neighbours.

The fortified farm

The Carthusian monks’ farm comprises three wings of living space which are set out around an inner courtyard. A wide porch way opens into a leisure garden. The buildings include several adjoining but independent houses. One of them has a swimming pool.


House
The former dovecote, located above the porch way in the middle of the facade, has been transformed over the years and is now an integral part of the house. The same can be said for the former chapel, the stone windows in the facade being the only reminder of its original role
The main, 290 m² house forms the left-hand corner of the enclosed courtyard. Facing south, it looks out over the garden, the terrace and the swimming pool. This magnificent family home, spanning 3 levels, has 4 superb bedrooms. The spacious rooms abound with many old features (exposed stone walls, old beams, studded doors, etc.).
The impressive French ceiling, its mullioned window and its old cooking range bestow the kitchen with great character.

The lounge is also illuminated via mullioned windows which provide views over the garden and the surrounding countryside, with the Alps mountain range as a backdrop. A glazed extension looks down on the terrace and its majestic wisteria. A summer kitchen has been laid out close to the terrace. Nearby, a wide deck surrounds the south-facing swimming pool. A small construction provides a little shade.

Guest house
The two buildings forming the left-hand wing of the inner courtyard have been converted into adjoining houses. The first, spanning 130 m², features an old, wide diameter bread oven which has been integrated into the lounge. With mullioned windows on opposing sides making it extremely luminous, this through room was, most certainly, one of the property’s main rooms. A wooden stairway leads to the upper floor which comprises three bedrooms and a bathroom under the slopes of the roof. A covered stone stairway goes down to the inner courtyard whilst an interior stairway goes to a spacious room, all on a level with the garden, which can be reached via a door on the south side.
Guest house
The second house, spanning approx. 90 m², has a reception room on the ground floor with a kitchen, illuminated via a wide mullioned window. The upstairs landing provides access to two bedrooms and a shower room. An outside stairway goes down from one of the bedrooms to the inner courtyard. The passageways that once made it possible to go from one house to the other could be re-opened.
Guest house
Adjoining the porch way, providing access to the courtyard, stands a small 85 m² house. The round stone pillar that partially supports the porch way is specific to this region. A wooden front door opens into a reception room with bare stone walls. The kitchen is next to it. A wooden stairway goes upstairs to a bathroom and the bedrooms. Bare stone and exposed beams give this small house a warm atmosphere.
Reception building
The right wing, following on from the small house, spans approx. 370 m² over three levels. It has been converted for professional use. The lower level comprises the kitchen, the bathroom and toilet facilities as well as a storeroom and a boiler room. Upstairs, the 180 m² function room is in line with modern-day standards for receiving the general public and has several entrances, one of which is all on a level. Wooden beams have been left exposed; the stone of the walls is also bare in places. On the uppermost floor, a lounge looks down on to the function room. A suspended passageway provides access to three bedrooms and a shower room with a toilet as well as a south-facing sun terrace.

The interior courtyard and the garden

The inner courtyard is protected by the facades of the buildings that once accommodated the monks. Some are enhanced by old buttresses. An old, stone ornamental pool in the centre supplied the farm with water. An impressive wooden gate provides access via a covered passageway to the garden that surrounds the property and dominates the valley. This countrified garden faces the Alps. The surrounding, uncultivated fields are a guarantee of absolute peace and quiet.

Our opinion

A place once chosen by monks inevitably exudes tranquillity. Here, spirits are raised by the ever-changing sight of the Alps mountain range. The windows, with their mullions or their wooden lintels, let light into multiple composite buildings. Family life would not be disturbed by a professional activity which already has fully converted reception and function rooms. The nature park contributes to the quality of the setting. Lyon is within easy reach. Fortified farm, stronghold house and traditional Chartreuse house: its five houses can but guarantee its future. With just seven centuries of existence, its history is written in stone!
