2 hours from Paris by TGV train, 1⅓ hours from London by airplane, 45 minutes from the ocean, the town which is home to the Dukes of Brittany’s castle is renowned for its appeal as well as its demographical and economic dynamism. This flat is in Nantes town centre, a sector with all big infrastructures such as a teaching hospital and a media library as well as numerous state and private schools. It is also a lively tourist town with cafés, shops and restaurants. Although it has an excellent public transport system, the town is also very easy to move around on foot or by bike.


The chapel is one of a group of buildings constructed in the 19th century in a neo-gothic style by architect Magloire-Tournesac. The buildings were destroyed during the Second World War (the chapel burnt down) and then rebuilt up until 1954. The roofing framework, completely devastated by fire, was replaced by a metal structure. After having been used as a retirement home for members of religious orders, the buildings were transformed into professional units and flats in 2006.
Visitors have to look up in order to see the chapel. The gable facade is laid out on three levels, narrow semi-circular arched windows on the first, triangular arched windows with tracery for the second, whilst the last level features a rose topped with a four-lobed window.
The co-owned property stands in a little, quiet street facing a square that was recently redesigned and forms a tranquil spot in the middle of the town. This flat is accessed via a porch under a crossed ribbed vault.
The co-owned chapel comprises but two flats, the rest of the building is divided between offices and a school of art.

The flat

This flat takes up the top floor of the old chapel. The resolutely modern renovation works have created an open-plan style and given pride of place to light and spaciousness. The layout of the rooms makes good use of the full height of the initial level via a set of stairways. Floors are covered with white-painted parquet flooring; door and window frames are made of dark grey aluminium; the beams are metallic. Artificial lighting is provided by spotlights, recessed in the ceilings.

First level
The entrance hall provides access to a laundry room, a cloakroom, a bathroom, with a sauna, and two stairways comprising but a few steps, one leading to two bedrooms on the half-level and the other to the lounge-library.
The two bedrooms are laid out opposite one another. Light comes in via oculi transformed into windows.
First floor
Straight in front at the top of the stairs, the rose takes up an entire wall in the lounge. It illuminates the whole room and accompanies the parrot-ladder stairs to the area used as a dining room. Walls are lined with shelves right up to the floor above. The square can be viewed through the motifs in the rose.
A low, triangular arched opening gives access to an astonishing television room, a cosy, blind room.
A sliding partition separates the lounge from the main bedroom, which has its own shower room and dressing room.

Top floor
The kitchen, spanning approx. 70 m², is fully fitted and illuminated via skylights. The metal beams of the roofing framework are exposed and in line with the four-lobed window in the facade.

Our opinion

A superb, modern renovation in a historic place.
Bright and spacious are the words that come to mind when visiting this flat. Light floods into the flat via its unusual windows, oculi in the bedrooms, skylights in the kitchen and, lastly, via the rose in the lounge. There are no nuisances to disturb the peace and quiet reigning throughout the premises. The size of the rooms is defined by the varying heights of the ceilings, the areas delimited by a few steps or partitions. The flat has a warm, convivial atmosphere and has no need of any works.
Its geographical location in the centre of Nantes is particularly sought-after by those seeking to live without cars. However, an optional garage will ensure that no-one is deprived.
