in the historic district of Antony

Antony, HAUTS-DE-SEINE paris 92160 FR
Paris

Location

This property is on the edge of a vast park in the town of Antony. The neighbouring towns all have numerous green open spaces such as Sceaux Park with its chateau, Verrières national forest and Vallée-aux-loups. Paris’ city gates, Porte-d’Orléans, are but 20 minutes away by car. 5 minutes away from the A86 motorway, linking all the towns in the Greater Paris Area.
Antony is a dynamic town with a lively centre, numerous shops, a much appreciated covered market, a busy cinema and an RER train station with 17-minute links to the centre of Paris. Orlyval is an automatic light metro shuttle service connecting the centre of Antony with the terminals at Orly airport in 8 minutes. The town of Antony also has both state and private schools such as the renowned Institution-Sainte-Marie deemed one of the best schools in the whole of the Ile-de-France region. The Ecole-Polytechnique and the Ecole-Centrale, both excellent higher education schools, are less than fifteen minutes from Antony.

Description

Three centuries of history and art are engraved in the soul of this residence set in one of the oldest districts of Antony, on the bank of the river Biévre. Actor François-Molé spent a large part of his life there. The gates to the property conceal a magnificent shady garden. An alleyway covered with “Napoleon” paving stones goes through the outbuildings and leads to steps up to the mansion house. This property also comprises an old converted stable, a caretaker’s cottage and an outbuilding. Panels above the upstairs windows of the old stable, adorned with three animal heads, are now included on the French Historic Monument list. All the outbuildings have new roofs.
In the entrance vestibule, the moulding on the walls and the ceiling rosette, all originals, reflect the room’s round shape. The marble floor tiles are laid in a chessboard pattern. The lounges and the dining room open into the vestibule. The smallest of the lounges features a fireplace, topped with a large mirror set in a gilt-edged frame. The second is bigger and yet the ambiance is muted. Bookshelves line one of the walls.
All the woodwork dates from the original construction of the building and the parquet flooring is laid in a herringbone pattern. On the other side of the vestibule, a spacious, hexagonal dining room has a view out over the garden. The kitchen is a vast, bright room under a veranda. It is fitted with numerous cupboards and has a door leading out to the garden. The master suite on the first floor comprises a large bedroom with a white marble fireplace and ceiling moulding, as well as a bathroom with a bath, an Italian-style shower and two marble wash-hand basins. On the landing are a large dressing room and two rooms, currently in use as offices which could be transformed back into two large bedrooms.
Facing south and west, all the upstairs rooms are steeped in light and have superb views of the parklands. The second floor is taken up by three large bedrooms, a pantry, a laundry room and storage areas as well as a bathroom.
The cellar is laid out with an area to lay down wine, a sauna and storage space.

The old stable

This former stable, with its listed facade, is the oldest construction. The current resident has totally renovated this building which overlooks the paved courtyard.
The living space comprises two lounges, a fitted kitchen, a bedroom and a converted attic. The first lounge is an elegant, extremely bright room with terracotta floor tiles under 18th century exposed ceiling beams. The fireplace has a provincial air.
The bathroom is fitted with an Italian style shower, a wash-hand basin and a toilet. The second, refined lounge could be transformed into a bedroom. It is illuminated so well via a window in each wall that this room has a full view of the property. Once again the ceiling features exposed beams.
The attic space has been converted into a single open space, enhancing the original beams. It spans a total living space of 150 m².

The caretaker’s cottage

The caretaker’s cottage comprises a lounge, a kitchen and a bedroom. The entrance is totally independent of all the other buildings. 60 m² of living space.

An outbuilding awaiting renovation

An 80 m² outbuilding, standing facing the stable, is still in its original condition. Apart from the completely new roof, it awaits restoration works throughout.

The garden

The vast, 2,000 m², south-west facing garden features a patch of lawn and one hundred year old trees, including a majestic sycamore tree. Three statues from different eras take pride of place amongst the verdant surroundings.

Our opinion

A mansion house so close to Paris. The facade was carefully decorated by an architect with dressed stone quoins and window framing bestowing it with a robust and stately appearance. The former stable holds its own against the main dwelling as regards architecture. The three animal heads sculpted on the window panels are intriguing. With the caretaker’s cottage and the outbuilding awaiting renovation, this property would ideally suit those professionals seeking to work from home. Its large, spacious rooms would also appeal to an artist. The garden is there to provide peace and quiet as well as a verdant touch of nature.
