Ville-d'Avray, HAUTS-DE-SEINE paris 92410 FR

In Ville-d'Avray, in the French department of Hauts-de-Seine, between Fausses-Reposes national forest and Saint-Cloud park. This house stands near to one of the entrances to the park, renowned for its promenades, its summer restaurants and the Club-du-Stade-Français sports complex. The proximity of schools and Sèvres’ international sixth form college is an invaluable asset. Sèvres-Ville-d'Avray train station has 15-minute links to La-Défense and Saint-Lazare.

This residence, a large family home spanning 420 m², is concealed by trees in a very large garden. It was built in the middle of the 19th century near to Fausses-Reposes forest and the lakes painted by Corot. A paved courtyard leads to a porch way, providing access to the house’s main entrance. The ground floor comprises three reception rooms: an entrance lounge, a lounge with columns and a large dining room, as well as a kitchen and a vestibule providing access to a magnificent veranda. The first floor includes three bedrooms, one of which has its own bathroom, as well as a study. The second floor is taken up by another three bedrooms, a laundry room and a workshop.

The house

This house, standing in the middle of the property, features numerous, wide windows, protected by green shutters, which immediately give an idea of the amount of luminosity taking pride of place inside. The porch way steps go directly up to the front door.

Ground floor
The entrance hall provides access to the first lounge which, in turn, leads to the other two reception rooms: the lounge with the columns and the dining room. Visitors are immediately struck by the authenticity of the materials used for the perfectly preserved and immaculately kept decoration: light-coloured, strip and herringbone pattern parquet flooring, fireplaces, wooden doors and moulding. Worthy of mention is the perfect preservation of the backed canvas paintings and the quality of the painted ceiling in the dining room. On the other side is a kitchen which, although functional, still has the convivial charm of old family kitchens: a terracotta tiled floor flanked with oak wood strips, a wide chimney breast above a cooking range and a small eating area. To the rear is a guest toilet as well as access to the large veranda. The latter, dating from 1870, has been restored in keeping with its initial construction. It is a pleasant place to linger, winter and summer alike, enabling residents to take advantage of the large garden areas and the adjoining paved terrace.
First floor
A superb curved and rounded stairway goes upstairs. It has bare oak wood steps and a walnut wood handrail. The landing provides access, on one side, to the master suite comprising a very large bedroom with access to a superb, private bathroom and a study-library. The floors are covered with the original Vincennes pattern parquet flooring. On the other side are two more bedrooms and a bathroom.
Second floor
This level, reached via the same stairway, is predominantly taken up by a large bedroom. It has semi-circular arched windows, with casement bolts, looking out over the garden on the south side. Another bedroom with a sloping ceiling and a bathroom could be used as a guest bedroom. There is also a laundry room as well as a superb room with a sloping ceiling currently in use as a workshop.
Reached via the vestibule, the basement houses the boiler as well as storage areas which are extremely useful in this large house. A concealed door on the side leads directly out into the garden.

The garden

The garden, spanning more than 3,400 m², is spread out all around the house. Under the protective eye of Diana the Huntress grow a wide variety of plants, including a very old boxwood bush, a holly bush and a tall fir tree that dominates the parklands. It is full of different nooks and crannies, enabling residents to take full advantage of this setting.

Our opinion

This is one of those houses where a special atmosphere reigns. Such is precisely the impression that visitors have on discovering this residence in the midst of its parklands. The charm of its decoration, the immaculately kept materials as well as the large number of spacious rooms and storage areas, everything contributes to a full and comfortable family way of life. The downstairs reception rooms make it possible to receive numerous friends whilst the upstairs bedrooms ensure everyone’s privacy and the garden means that full advantage can be taken of the natural surroundings. This property is so near to the French capital that it would be easy to combine work or urban activities with relaxation of a weekend in the shade of the tall fir tree.
