A 19th century, middle-class residence, with its rich interior decors,
in the centre of the small historic capital of the Beaujolais region

Lyon, RHONE rhones-alps 69000 FR

A Seigneury in the Middle-Ages, the small town is set in the heart of the Beaujolais region. Between the first foothills of the Massif-Central and the Saône Valley, between the upholding of a deeply rooted tradition and a desire for modernisation essential to its survival, it has seen its history develop over the centuries under the heavily marked influence of a world-renowned vine-growing industry. This residence stands in the historic centre, with a wealth of heritage that notably comprises a Romanesque style church and half-timbered houses.
Just 45 minutes by car from Lyon via the A6 motorway, 30 minutes from Mâcon-Loché TGV train station, with its 90-minute links to Paris, and 2 hours by road from Geneva.

This property is set on a hillside, overlooking a stream that runs through the town. Its historic district comprises wonderful residences constructed in the 19th century, together with half-timbered houses. Now a lively shopping area, it is but a stone’s throw from all amenities with a market, boutiques and schools as well as cultural and sports centres. The small garden is laid out in terraces, one of which features a swimming pool, surrounded by a wide deck paved with slate. This residence has a panoramic view of buildings set against a backdrop of the vine-covered hills.

The middle-class residence

This residence, spanning three levels of living space, is topped with a steep slate roof, decorated with finials. The facades feature numerous, symmetrically aligned openings.

Ground floor
The main entrance is set in the middle of the facade. It comprises double wooden doors, partially decorated with stained glass windows and protected by a wrought iron latticework canopy. This entrance provides access to a vestibule, its floor covered with cement tiles, the colours of which match those in the stained glass windows of the doors. The ceiling is decorated with moulding and the walls with panelling. Facing the entrance are a second set of double doors, matching the first set, they too are enhanced with stained glass windows. This vestibule is a prelude to the rich interior decor throughout the residence.
A passageway, on one side, leads to a functional kitchen, renovated in a contemporary style. It has a large, adjoining storeroom. A toilet is to be found at the beginning of this passageway. A lounge is on the other side. This room, spanning approx. 35 m², is richly adorned with carved wooden panelling. A pink marble fireplace is topped with a trumeau, illuminated via two glass mosaic wall lamps. Its ceiling is painted and embellished with a central rose. The wall facing the fireplace opens on to the terrace via double doors, featuring stained glass windows and flanked by matching authentic glass mosaic wall lights.
The double doors in the vestibule provide access to another vestibule which houses a superb stone stairway as well as the residence’s second entrance. The floor is laid with cement tiles. This vestibule opens into a study with a grey marble fireplace.

First floor
The stone stairway leads to the first floor which comprises three bedrooms and a bathroom. The master bedroom has its own bathroom. A marble fireplace and parquet flooring give it a warm atmosphere. A French window opens on to a balcony which is set on a corner of the building.
A large dressing room adjoins the second bedroom. The third bedroom features a wash-hand basin and cement floor tiles, the colours of which match the hues of the fireplace. All three bedrooms are enhanced with a marble fireplace.

Second floor
The steps of the stairway leading from the first up to the second floor are made of wood. This level comprises two bedrooms as well as a shower room and a spacious games room which is home to a billiards’ table. It could equally well be turned into a large bedroom. A door on the landing opens on to an outside walkway which leads directly to the upper garden terrace.

The tower

This stone tower, spanning three levels connected by a stairway, is uninhabited. Each floor comprises one room which, if desired, could communicate with the inside of the main house. This tower has its own entrance and could, therefore, be set out as a self-contained dwelling.

The swimming pool and the terraced garden

The garden brings natural surroundings into the centre of the small town. It has been terraced because of the sloping hillside. The house is accessed via a wide paved terrace which provides a large area, all on a level, in front of the lounge and around the house. Vaulted cellars are to be found at the back of the house, near to its second entrance and that of the tower. A stone stairway leads to the upper levels of the terracing. One of these is closed by an old wrought iron gate. Another would be ideal for the creation of an orchard and a vegetable garden. Yet another of these areas features a swimming pool, flanked by a large deck, paved with slate. One garden level, laid out below the house, is used as a car parking area.

Our opinion

The lie of the land dictated the terracing of the garden, thus creating a variety of areas, one of which has been given over to a swimming pool. This residence presents its stately, 3-part facade to the valley. An ornate, lead crest connects two pavilion roofs on either side. This type of decoration is a sure sign, announcing an interior decor that enhances every room which, in this case, is particularly refined. The art of living was and remains a choice.
