A Seigneury in the Middle-Ages, the small town is set in the heart of the Beaujolais region. Between the first foothills of the Massif-Central and the Saône Valley, between the upholding of a deeply rooted tradition and a desire for modernisation essential to its survival, it has seen its history develop over the centuries under the heavily marked influence of a world-renowned vine-growing industry. This residence stands in the historic centre, with a wealth of heritage that notably comprises a Romanesque style church and half-timbered houses.
Just 45 minutes by car from Lyon via the A6 motorway, 30 minutes from Mâcon-Loché TGV train station, with its 90-minute links to Paris, and 2 hours by road from Geneva.
The middle-class residence
This residence, spanning three levels of living space, is topped with a steep slate roof, decorated with finials. The facades feature numerous, symmetrically aligned openings.
This stone tower, spanning three levels connected by a stairway, is uninhabited. Each floor comprises one room which, if desired, could communicate with the inside of the main house. This tower has its own entrance and could, therefore, be set out as a self-contained dwelling.
The swimming pool and the terraced garden
The garden brings natural surroundings into the centre of the small town. It has been terraced because of the sloping hillside. The house is accessed via a wide paved terrace which provides a large area, all on a level, in front of the lounge and around the house. Vaulted cellars are to be found at the back of the house, near to its second entrance and that of the tower. A stone stairway leads to the upper levels of the terracing. One of these is closed by an old wrought iron gate. Another would be ideal for the creation of an orchard and a vegetable garden. Yet another of these areas features a swimming pool, flanked by a large deck, paved with slate. One garden level, laid out below the house, is used as a car parking area.
The lie of the land dictated the terracing of the garden, thus creating a variety of areas, one of which has been given over to a swimming pool. This residence presents its stately, 3-part facade to the valley. An ornate, lead crest connects two pavilion roofs on either side. This type of decoration is a sure sign, announcing an interior decor that enhances every room which, in this case, is particularly refined. The art of living was and remains a choice.
