This residence is 25 km from the large, historic town of Rouen, where there is no need to go right into the town centre to find hypermarkets and cinemas. Even nearer, just 8 km away, is the little town of Bourg-Achard with all shops and amenities.
Local shops and even restaurants about a kilometre away can be reached on foot. There is a wide range of activities to choose from in the local area such as hiking, cycling or horse-riding in the forest and potholing in the cliffs. As in one of Flaubert’s novels, a ferryboat makes it possible to cross the Seine.


A forest separates the A13 motorway from the banks of the Seine. This property, enclosed by a stone wall and a hedge on two of its sides, backs on to the cliff. An unobstructed view over the river is to be had from the garden and the second level of the house.
A long gravel driveway leads from the village street to the building facade. A small, restored dwelling stands on its left-hand side. Housing one room with a cathedral ceiling which could easily accommodate a mezzanine, it could be completed with two back rooms awaiting renovation. This house has its own independent access off the village street.
The garden, on the right-hand side of the residence, stretches out with a small outbuilding at the end. Espalier-trained fruit trees, including pear, fig, peach and cherry as well as raspberry canes and a vine, run along one of the property’s walls. A majestic Lebanon cedar tree appears to be greeting the main house.

The 18th century residence

This three storey building, constructed in 1789, has spacious rooms, the original features of which are still in their original condition. The hip slate roof features hanging, hip roof dormers with overhanging eaves. The numerous openings are all double-glazed. Those on the first floor are protected by slatted, wooden shutters. The main rendered facade is decorated with brick framing and string courses. The rear facade features half-timbering as of the first floor. This is filled with exposed brick on the third level. A gravel terrace, receiving the morning sun, runs alongside the residence. It is an ideal place for taking meals when the weather is clement.

Ground floor
Double, solid wooden doors open into the entrance hall which houses a wooden stairway, with balusters, still in its original condition. A dining room, on the left-hand side, is flanked by a kitchen, laid out in an outbuilding adjoining the residence. On the right-hand side, a vast lounge is enhanced by a fireplace. All the rooms on this level have French windows. Old cement floor tiles, featuring superb patterns, are to be found in all the rooms.
First floor
The layout on this level is the same as that on the ground floor. The landing, with its terracotta floor tiles, provides access to two bedrooms, a dressing room and a room that could be used as a little bedroom. There is also a shower room and a bathroom. The floors are covered with old and recent parquet flooring.
Second floor
This level under the rafters, once an old attic, has been converted, leaving its impressive roofing framework exposed. It comprises two vast, matching bedrooms, each with a shower room and toilet. The hip roof dormers, with overhanging eaves, provide views of the river Seine. There is pitch-pine parquet flooring throughout.

The small dwelling

This former artist’s studio, with its white stone facades, houses a vast room with a cathedral ceiling, in which it would be possible to add a mezzanine. Two back rooms could be converted. A wide French window lets in copious amounts of day and sunlight. The roof is covered with local tiles. A wood-burning stove provides heat on cooler days. The floor is tiled.

The outbuilding

A vast room, with double-glazed windows and a concrete floor, could also be converted into a living room. It features stone facades and a roof covered with local tiles.

Our opinion

The Seine flows almost at its feet. The various facades give this residence the air of a country house, typical of Normandy. It has remained authentic and yet has become comfortable enough to be lived in all year round or just for holidays. The current owner plays the organ and his instrument takes pride of place in the lounge; proof perhaps of this home’s tranquil and inspiring atmosphere.
