Description

This property, extending over approx. 4 hectares, stands on one of the hills surrounding a village. Typical of the region, it is quiet, full of charm and has some 270 inhabitants. A pretty Romanesque church, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, takes pride of place in the centre of this haven of peace. A little road leads from the village and passes in front of a set of heavy metal gates, flanked by tall pillars. These gates, facing a manor house, open into a main courtyard. The property also includes a caretaker’s cottage and numerous outbuildings, all looking out over the enclosed main courtyard.

The manor house

This manor house, constructed in a neo-classical style in the 19th century, comprises two adjoining buildings. Standing over cellars, it spans two levels of living space as well as an attic floor and is topped with very steep roofs.
The elegant, symmetrical facade is rendered and covered with climbing plants during the summer months. Its numerous windows look out over the main courtyard and the parklands.

Ground floor
The central entrance door opens into a long vestibule with cement floor tiles. A through room, it opens directly on to the parklands. It houses a stairway with wooden steps which go to the upper floors.
This vestibule provides access to the reception rooms, laid out in an extremely symmetrical manner. A small music room, heated via a marble fireplace, precedes a magnificent library. The room is laid out on the ground floor of the square pavilion adjoining the main building. The library is richly decorated with panelling, an outstanding moulded ceiling, adorned with plasterwork décor, as well as a red veined alabaster fireplace. Its parquet flooring is laid in a randomly matched pattern.
The vestibule provides access in the same way to a study which precedes a large lounge, adjoining the library. The rooms intercommunicate. The large lounge looks out over the parklands. Its herringbone pattern parquet flooring blends beautifully with an elegant painted and moulded ceiling. A marble fireplace contributes to the warm atmosphere in this bright room.
A dining room, on the other side of the vestibule, is followed by a fully renovated kitchen and provides access to a superb bedroom with its own bathroom.

First floor
The central stairway, with its wooden steps, goes up to the first floor, before continuing to the second floor. A landing with parquet flooring provides access to the five bedrooms on this second level. A first bedroom has a pink marble fireplace as well as its own bathroom and dressing room. The other four bedrooms share two bathrooms. a variety of marble fireplaces enhance these spacious, bright bedrooms, looking out over the courtyard or the parklands. A second stairway housed in the square pavilion goes up to the third level in this section.
Second floor
Two spacious bedrooms, laid out on the top floor under the sloping roofs of the square building, are illuminated via shed dormers and given a certain charm by their arched windows.
The second floor in the main building comprises the old staff bedrooms which could easily be redecorated and used once again.

The caretaker’s cottage and other outbuildings

The caretaker’s cottage, standing at the entrance to the property, is built over a wine cellar. It has an entrance independent of the main courtyard. All its living space is on the ground floor and faces the outbuildings. It comprises a kitchen, a lounge and two bedrooms with a shower room and a toilet. This functional dwelling also has a garage, once a stable, and is topped with attic space.
Several outbuildings are laid out in front of the caretaker’s cottage and on the side of the manor house. They include, amongst others, a kennel, an old henhouse, the old stables now garages, an old barn and the gardener’s cottage. There is a well in the courtyard.
The parklands, planted with trees, hundreds of years old, surround the manor house, providing a verdant setting. A bridle path makes it easy to walk in natural surroundings that have not been overly tamed.

Our opinion

Like the old French province of Bourbonnais, this manor house exudes tasteful grace, enhanced by a certain opulence and the simplicity of having nothing to prove. It is difficult to look at it without feeling emotion created by the sober beauty of the expression of a familiar culture. Guests are pampered: the ceilings in the reception rooms, for instance, are sumptuous. The parklands are a natural invitation to go for a walk.
