An ideal location in one of the rare remaining bucolic corners of the Paris region, a few minutes’ drive from the tranquil historic town of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, and just an hour away from Paris by the A4 motorway or a forty-minute train journey (station ten minutes from the house). Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport is a forty-five minute drive and Marne-la-Vallée half an hour away.


The property’s initial attraction is the romantic garden, backing onto woodland, featuring a central pond and the river Marne in the distance. Never a farm or workshop, the 18th-century house was always intended to be the relaxing home it is today, a place to escape from city life, to enjoy leafy surroundings and fresh air. It has no doubt always been a haven for busy Parisians or other townies in need of the benefits of country life. The initial building was tastefully extended in the 19th century. The bright white house is literally surrounded by the garden, which spans over a hectare.

The house

The two-stage construction is obvious in the L-shaped building. The 19th-century part is bourgeois in appearance, with coin stones, window cornices, a curved pediment, wood and iron parapets and even a balcony on the gable. In the same part of the house, a short flight of steps leads to the glazed front door which sports black ironwork. The 18th-century part of the house is more sober in appearance. The blue shutters and white cladding harmonise the two parts, as does the roof, with its tiling typical of local customs.

Ground floor
Entrance is via a spacious hall with parquet floor and ornate mouldings. Off the hall, three bedrooms – one of which is used as an office – a bathroom and a laundry room. A painted wooden staircase leads to the first floor.
First floor
Given the slope, the first floor, the heart of the house, is at garden level, with the kitchen opening directly onto the garden. The kitchen has imposing beams and its large window gives the feeling of being at one with nature. The neighbouring dining room leads to the living room. Both reception rooms have a parquet floor and wainscoting with fabric wallcoverings above. The other wing houses the master bedroom, which has three windows, a bathroom and dressing room. It opens onto a balcony with a 180° view.

The garden

The garden surrounds the house. The front garden has old rose bushes and topiary bushes. The second part is composed of a vast lawn with several large trees and pond filled with water irises from the ramparts of Marrakesh. The atmosphere is that of an English country garden. The lawn slopes up the hill. At the top, a teak bench offers a superb view of the banks of the Marne.

The outbuildings

Below the house, going towards the gate, a shed with double doors houses garden tools. A partially underground orangery offers shelter for plants in winter. The three large windows provide plenty of light. This building can be used as an extra guest room.

Our opinion

Easy to get to from Paris, this home has retained the spirit of the countryside home held dear by Jean- Jacques Rousseau. Bathed in beautiful light and framed by rolling landscapes, it exudes charm. Located in a pleasant village close to the shops and restaurants of La Ferté-sous-Joarre, the property is an absolute haven, in winter or summer – an oasis of calm for city workers. The location close to Paris makes it equally attractive as a main residence or second home.
