Location
The A6 motorway provides a direct link to the French capital (some 50 km away). On the edge of Fontainebleau forest, about 10 minutes from the town with the same name, Barbizon is known the world over for having attracted and housed a number of painters as of the 19th century. Notably landscape painters, these pioneers of the impressionist movement found an inexpensive inn, Auberge-Ganne, where they were free to work, laugh, sing and discuss things together. The famous “Barbizon School” was founded. Jean-François-Millet’s studio can still be visited and the rocks painted by Camille-Corot are within walking distance.
The main street, lined with elegant residences, has some very good restaurants, galleries and all local shops.
Description
This property stands in the centre of the village, in a very quiet, residential street. It is enclosed on the road side by solid railings set into a low stone wall. A pedestrian gate opens into a courtyard. A gatehouse is extended towards the garden, at right angles, by a building that comprises a garage, a workshop and a guest house. A swimming pool has been installed at the back. Wooden gates, flanked by stone pillars in the centre of the wall, provide entrance to vehicles. The house stands in front of the courtyard, extended at the back, on the wooded side, by a large wooden terrace.
The residence
This house dates from the early 20th century. Its quarry stone block facades include brick quoins and all the features of the vernacular architecture of this era (a time when the so-called “Follies” were built on the banks of the Seine), a mix of bricks, decorative half-timbering, coloured ceramic tile friezes, large windows topped with balconies, featuring wooden railings, and widely overhanging slate roofs. A section of the second floor is extended by a large terrace, enclosed by wooden railings, supported by brick pillars. The building spans approx. 190 m² of living space over three levels. The basement, spanning approx. 80 m², has been converted.
Ground floor
The main entrance is reached via a porch, raising the ground floor by a few steps. On one side, a wide stairway, illuminated by stained-glass windows, goes to the upper floors and down to the basement. It is followed by a toilet and then a fitted kitchen, with terracotta floor tiles, that opens on to the terrace. On the other side, a very bright, spacious reception room is illuminated via numerous, wide windows, opening on to the garden. It is laid out, on the one hand, as a lounge, featuring an impressive red marble fireplace, and, on the other, as a dining room-library which opens on to the large terrace. The floors are covered with herringbone pattern parquet flooring and its high ceilings, partially featuring neo-gothic coffers, provide a glimpse of several characters.
First floor
A landing leads, on one side, to a comfortable bedroom, with a bathroom and toilet, and, on the other side, to a spacious suite comprising a bedroom, a dressing room, a bathroom, with a shower, and a separate toilet. The floors are covered with parquet flooring. Each bedroom opens on to a balcony.
Second floor
This floor, with its slightly sloping ceilings, is taken up by two bedrooms, a bathroom with a toilet and a large terrace.
Basement
This converted basement includes a laundry room, a room with a shower and a toilet, a games room as well as a boiler room.
The guest house
This guest house follows on from the building set at right angles to the gatehouse. It comprises a lounge-study separated from a bedroom, with its shower room and toilet, by a workshop style atrium window. The ceilings feature brick jack-arches and wide windows open on to the swimming pool. Its spans a surface area of approx. 36 m².
The gatehouse
Its facades predominantly feature brick and decorative half-timbering. It is topped with a turret. The ground floor features a kitchen, a shower room with a toilet, and a small room. Upstairs are two bedrooms and access to a terrace. This house, spanning a surface area of approx. 50 m², is extended by a garage and a workshop.
The swimming pool
This heated swimming pool is installed in front of the guest house. It measures approx. 13x3 m.
Our opinion
To complete this scene, the village in which this large property is set has the same name as one of the most famous movements of 19th century French painting: the Barbizon School. On the edge of the immense Fontainebleau forest, the landscape is still as beautiful as at the time of Millet, Daubigny and Théodore-Rousseau. Recently fully restored, this bright residence is perfectly worthy of such a heritage. The residents have achieved a successful balance between the old features, modernity and comfort. The site is ideal, in a very quiet district in the centre of Barbizon. Shops and the forest are within walking distance.
