A traditional Bastide house, nestling in unspoilt and protected countryside, near to a medieval village in the midst of vineyards in the French department of Var. This property is reached off of a little tourist route. The entrance provides access to a dirt track, bordered by stone terracing, going up through the grounds. The traditional Bastide house
This old, traditional Bastide house, spanning two levels, is currently undergoing restoration works. Skilled craftsmen (Compagnons du Devoir) have achieved outstanding results. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall with a monumental stairway, a dining room, a kitchen with a larder, and a laundry room. On the other side, a large lounge, with a stone fireplace, opens on to a terrace. An adjoining room, with no windows, could be included in this living space. The upstairs includes three large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and dressing room.
The gardener’s cottage
A stone cabin has been laid out as a guest room (or caretakers’ cottage). This 40 m² dwelling comprises a dining room with a kitchen and a mezzanine. A terrace with a pergola, covered in climbing wisteria, communicates with a garden planted with quince, fig, olive and other fruit trees. Steps provide an independent entrance.
The private lake and the waterfall
Below the Bastide, a little river runs through a steep-sided valley, where the water makes its way through the limestone soil. A waterfall, some 10 m high, feeds a natural pool which overflows into other cavities one after another. There is also a small artificial lake which does not dry up even in the hottest of summers. A rare, protected wildlife has also made these grounds its home.
This property had new life breathed into it through the good, age-old trade practices of skilled craftsmen (Compagnons du Devoir). The interior decoration, with its marble, dressed stone and trompe-l'œil, is far more sophisticated than the house’s rustic exterior. Large Burgundy stone floor tiles and the walnut wood entrance door are but two of the numerous decorative features. The inside is almost completed. The large lounge and its secret room are in the finishing stages. Improvement works will be carried out on the carpark and the driveway unless their natural state proves more appealing. New owners will be able to add their own personal touches in order to complete the metamorphosis of a residence, whose originality lies in contrasts. Countryside worthy of dreams, with a crystal clear water river, a waterfall and a small lake, is immediately to hand.
