A late 19th century, oriental house constructed for Michel-Pacha
overlooking Tamaris Bay in Toulon harbour

Location

45 minutes from the airport, 25 minutes from the TGV train station (35 minutes via shuttle boat across the harbour), 15 minutes from the motorway, 5 minutes from the shops and a sandy beach, 50 m from the sea front. In a wooded district where Marius-Michel, known as Michel-Pacha, had numerous Hispano-Moorish style residences built at the end of the 19th century. This French seaman earned favour with Sultan-Abdülmecid by modernising the entire Ottoman system of lighthouses and beacons, work that enabled him to obtain the concession for the quays on Istanbul’s ports and thus make a fortune, deemed colossal at that time.

Description

This east-facing house was constructed 50 m from the water’s edge. It is protected from the corniche by its verdant garden. The white facade, adorned with Sidi-Bou-Saïd style blue shutters, is inset with friezes composed from glazed ceramic tiles and features rounded and arched projections, designating domes. The little minaret, standing on the panoramic terrace near the roof, and the crescent sculpted above a door enhance its oriental character even more. The terrace is bordered by white merlons. The apron walls, under the first floor windows, are made of bricks laid in geometric designs. A small balcony, bordered by balusters, extends the dining room on the ground floor. The land, which predominantly extends in front of the house, is planted with palm trees as well as oleander and magnolia bushes, dominated by a tall umbrella pine tree. Behind the building, on the west side, are numerous outbuildings that include two garages, a caretaker’s flat and five bedrooms. The plot of land is big enough to take a swimming pool.

The house

This house, spanning approx. 330 m² of living space, can be reached either from the corniche via the garden, or from a little street on the west side. The rear forms a small courtyard where it is possible to park several cars.


Ground floor
The main door, on the east side, at the top of a few steps, opens into a vestibule and a veranda, paved with cement tiles. Another door on the west side leads directly to the kitchen, with its terracotta floor tiles, via a small stairway. A wide stairway goes up from the vestibule to the upper floors. The rooms on this level, with 4 m high ceilings, are extremely comfortable. The large, 42 m² lounge, laid out on the north side, is enhanced by inlaid parquet flooring. A 31 m² dining room, on the south side, also has wrought parquet flooring. This room leads to the west-facing kitchen. A corridor leads from the vestibule to the kitchen which adjoins a back kitchen-laundry room. A toilet, reached from the outside, has been installed near to the kitchen door.
First floor
A small, intermediate, closed landing provides access to a toilet with a wash-hand basin as well as to a bathroom. The wood and wrought iron stairway continues up to the first floor with its 3.4 m high ceilings and parquet flooring throughout. This level comprises three bedrooms with painted ceilings, fireplaces and sea views. One of the bedrooms has a shower room and another has a wash-hand basin; the last bedroom opens into a shower room that can also be accessed from the landing. There is also a separate toilet with a wash-hand basin.
Second floor
A first bedroom with a wash-hand basin and toilet, laid out on the north side, communicates with another smaller bedroom, facing north-east. A third, east-facing bedroom has a magnificent view. There is also a large studio flat, the bedroom of which has a panoramic view courtesy of its three east and south-facing windows. It comprises a kitchen area, a bath and a toilet. This last section has floor tiles, contrary to the bedrooms which have parquet flooring. The ceilings are approx. 3.1 m high.
Terrace
A second, smaller stairway leads to two terraces separated by the little minaret. The bigger terrace has a view over Toulon harbour; the other smaller one faces west over the garden.
Basement
This level, reached via the garden level, spans approx. 135 m² with a 1.5 m high ceiling. It takes up the entire floor surface area of the building and is used for storage purposes. It also forms a crawl space which contributes to keeping the residence quite sound. The shower installed next to the door is very practical for residents returning from the beach.
Group of buildings
Two buildings, awaiting full renovation works, span a floor surface area of 180 m². They stand behind the main residence. The first houses a garage, two storage areas and two other rooms on the ground floor. The upstairs comprises a caretaker’s flat with a kitchen area, a bedroom and a shower room; it has another upstairs bedroom. The other building comprises a garage with three upstairs bedrooms.

Our opinion

This house has a visionary character for several reasons. First of all, because it represents the passion of a man, Michel-Pacha, native of Sanary and creator of Tamaris, who made his fortune in the 1870’s by putting his nautical knowledge at the disposal of the Ottoman sultan. Hence this architectural and sentimental allusion evoking Sidi-Bou-Saïd and the banks of the river Bosphorus. And then, because the panoramic view that it has of the Bay, crisscrossed with fishing boats and crafts of all sizes, is both stunning and picturesque. And lastly, because the original decor of its extremely bright, restful rooms is virtually still intact. Having carried out some minor works, new owners could house a large family in a “Belle Époque” atmosphere. Passing guests could also be accommodated in the numerous outbuildings, knowing that a shuttle boat provides direct access to Toulon train station and its market, ensuring a complete change of air.
