Monks have always demonstrated a remarkable gift for establising monasteries and abbeys in inspiring places. Located in the heart of the icaunaise countryside, a veritable mosaic of cultures and wooded plots, Vauluire is a living testimony to this. Successive modifications carried out over the centuries have graced it with a beautiful harmony marked by a certain solemnity. The main house is classic in style and has become an elegant family home. The old service buildings which surround it are of older origin. They form a sort of hamlet and hint at the founders' desire for self-sufficiency. But make no mistake, austerity and rigour are long gone and now the abbey is celebrating!
We both had ties to Burgundy with our respective families and we have always known the Domaine de Vauluisant. My mother was the president of the association which manages all the artistic and historical parts of the estate. In 2013, we were looking for a bigger house to open a bed and breakfast and house our family. It was by sharing our project with my mother that we learnt that Vaulisant was available. It was much bigger than what we were looking but we thought "Why not?". Chance came our way and it didn't take us long to decide.
The estate is a former 12th century Cistercian abbey. The seven-hectare English-style romantic park, created by Léopold Javal between 1848 and 1859 and planted with seven thousand trees, is surrounded by high walls and equipped with the old Cistercian hydraulic network. It houses a set of buildings that were restored in the 16th century: porteries, a tithe barn, a dovecote, a mill, a chapel, a guest house and a François I building. The chateau is a conversion of the convent building. The gatehouse, the main staircase and the park are classified as historic monuments.
The Vauluire Cistercian Abbey was founded in 1127 by a group of monks from the Preuilly Abbey. After being destroyed and pillaged several times, it made it through the Hundred Years War and experienced a real resurrection in the 16th century. It was at this time that the buildings that still exist today, scattered throughout the park, were built or significantly changed. During the French Revolution, the estate was partially dismantled and became property of the State, a switch from the private domain. It notably belonged to Léopold Javal, a banker and inventor of the 19th century. Today, the property's income comes from agriculture, the bed and breakfast and the seminars, weddings and cultural activities that are held here.
At the Domaine de Vauluisant, we offer a stay in another time. The calm and beauty of the place allow our guests to disconnect from their daily lives and take a real break from their sometimes hectic lives. The place becomes theirs. Massages and yoga sessions upon reservation are possible with professionals who come to the chateau.
For foodies, the Brissonet pastry shop in Villeneuve-l'Archevêque makes the Villeneuvien, a local specialty and a trademark registered in 1994. The delicacy is made from meringue and hazelnut paste with a nougatine cream - truly irresistible! We also recommend the champagne house Veuve Virey in Landreville and Le Belvédère which is a nearby restaurant with a breathtaking view of the forest lake in Orient. In Sens, our guests can contact the Michelin-starred chef Patrick Gaultier at the restaurant La Madeleine by mentioning that they are staying with us. Also in Sens, you can have lunch at L’Ambiance des Halles, a seafood restaurant, or at Chalet near the cathedral which specialises in Savoyard cuisine. The Camille Claudel museum in Nogent-sur-Seine is not to be missed. In the historic centre of Troyes, the museum of modern art (which is shaped like a champagne cork) is also a must-see. Afterwards, you can enjoy traditional cuisine, products and the real Troyes sausage as Le Jardin.
