So close, and yet so far! This could easily be the motto of this house built in the middle of centuries-old olive groves, far from the hustle and bustle of the Riviera and only a few minutes from the coast. Adorned with joined stones and a slightly sloping tiled roof, it blends into the landscape of wooded hills and tall foliage in multiple shades of green that protect it from the harsh sun. Inspired by distant wanderings, a few nods to Persian architecture and Middle Eastern decor animate the sobriety of the building and awaken a desire to travel. A desire that will be easily satisfied here as guests divide their time between lazing by the pool, swimming in the sea and discovering the riches of the Var.
Chance and necessity. Chance led me to Sanary when I was appointed professor at the University of Aix-Marseille. A meeting, an impulsive purchase of this architect's house in 1995, a departure abroad for fifteen years, then a return to enjoy a well deserved retirement.
It is a house from the 60's and 70's built by an architect who worked in the archaeological research centres of Iran which inspired the Middle Eastern, more specifically Iranian, feel. It was renovated in 2013 to install the necessary comforts and modernity. The house has a unique style, nestled in a Provençal hill spared from urbanisation. The garden flourishes in the heart of a hectare of terraces planted with olive trees, some of which are probably centuries-old. The ensemble creates something of an amphitheater where nature, by choice of the owners, is destined to run wild.
Built and designed by the owner at the time, the house is very influenced by his different stays in Iran and Morocco.
A quiet place, full of serenity and authenticity despite its proximity to the "summer madness". Bandol and Sanary with plenty of beaches and tourist attractions are only a few minutes away by car. Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Avignon and Toulon are immediately accessible as well as the entire coast and the Var hinterland.
Two places places in particular are worth a detour. The first is located on l'Île verte, a small island off the coast of La Ciotat. It can be reached by a shuttle or a boat if you're lucky enough to own one. There is a delicious beach restaurant with warm, welcoming service. The products are fresh and the place is well preserved. The second is located in Sanary, at Portissol beach. The restaurant is called O’Petit Monde. It serves refined, Italian cuisine by the sea in an extremely pleasant and exotic environment. The villages of Cadière and Castelet are home to Michelin starred restaurants and some excellent smaller restaurants in a medieval setting.
