The building's facade is gradually revealed as you near the end of the leafy driveway, before crossing the stone bridge over the moat and going through the high entrance gate. The building is white and symmetrical, with large windows and slate roofs. It is Neo-classicism at its best. The style is also clear to see inside, where sculpted decorations, pillars and wrought-iron balustrades set the tone right from the entrance hall. The interior is vast, with one room following on from another like ballrooms opening out onto the grounds. Of course, the decor has changed since Diderot and Sophie Volland secretly shared their passion here. But the site is still as beautiful as it must have been then, with its grounds where long grassy paths lined with majestic trees draw the eye towards the horizon. Here, visitors can enjoy a gentler pace of life in a harmonious setting.
We fell in love with this property. It has a unique charm and is bathed in a very special light in every season of the year. It is surrounded by lush green countryside. Here you can take the time to breathe, recharge your batteries, relax and feel alive again.
It is built of Chaumont stone with slate roofs lit by dormer windows. Looking out onto the front courtyard, the main building is harmoniously proportioned, subtly enhanced by two slightly projecting bays. Dressed stone chains, surrounds and cornices stand out against the rendering covering the masonry. The decoration focuses on the central bay which is framed by classical pilasters. The carved oak door and round-headed window on the first floor are topped by a small triangular pediment bearing the Jacobé-Becquey count's crown coat of arms. Like a drawbridge, there is a wooden footbridge that can be raised to close up entry. The Château d'Isle-sur-Marne and its main courtyard are set on a rectangular platform of land with, to the right, large U-shaped outbuildings with timber-framed walls with cob hoarding covered with lime plaster. The grounds extend to the rear well beyond the moat alongside a stretch of the river and end in a wooded area interspersed with meadows that joins the Marne and its private beach.
The chateau was built between 1720 and 1740 by Jean-Robert Volland, Director General of the Gabelles de France. In 1755, his daughter Sophie was 39 when she met Denis Diderot, then aged 42. He stayed at the château twice, in 1759 and 1770. His letters to Sophie Volland, which lasted more than 14 years, are the most famous love letters of the 18th century. The property was sold in 1773 for the first time and then changed owners three times. Home to the Goncourt family from the end of the 19th century, in 2001 it became the property of German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who sold it to us in 2011. The chateau has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1984.
After more than 10 years taken to completely restore the chateau, we decided to share this magnificent estate and give other people the possibility to stay in this enchanting setting too. Our guests can enjoy a stay in beautiful nature with over 14 hectares of private grounds and woodland. The property also has a large heated swimming pool close to the outbuildings, as well as numerous leisure and relaxation facilities.
The Lac du Der covers 5000 hectares and is renowned for its major ornithological importance. Every year from mid-October to mid-March, it hosts thousands of migrating grey cranes, Europe's largest wading bird with a wingspan of two metres. The lake has six beaches, three harbours and a casino. You can also enjoy fishing, water sports and hiking over 250 kilometres of signposted paths and cycle tracks. In the neighbouring village of Matignicourt-Goncourt, the gourmet restaurant "O Délices des Papilles" offers guests a taste of the very best of French cuisine. On request, its chef Denis Chatelet can prepare and serve lunch, dinner or breakfast at the chateau, or give a French cookery course on site. Once through the main door, the central hall opens onto a line of four reception rooms facing the grounds: a dining room, a large lounge, a billiards room and a television room. A hall after leads to a bedroom with an en suite bathroom, a laundry room, a bathroom with a toilet, a service entrance and the kitchen. The grand staircase leads to a transverse corridor opening onto the hall which separates the courtyard rooms from the rooms overlooking the grounds. On the courtyard side, there is a linen room, a shower room and two bedrooms, one with a private bathroom and toilet. Parallel to this, facing the grounds, there are two bedrooms, a bathroom with a toilet and a sauna before the adjoining guest room. A passage concealed in the woodwork leads to a bedroom with an alcove. There are two further bedrooms in the attic.
